Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
You just made me laugh out loud - thanks!

| Unbelievable. She took a personal day off..and? |
Amen! |
In most districts teachers aren't paid for the designated school vacation days. So why would it be surprising that they accrue sick/personal leave just like any other professional? Not every life event/vacation/dr appt/sick day can be conveniently scheduled on the days that students aren't in school. |
teachers aren't paid during christmas and spring break, etc? |
Yeah - aren't teachers salaried? |
No. They are paid for the number of days they work (more than the number of days students are in school). Then that number is divided among 20 pay periods. So although they get paid throughout the school year, they don't actually get paid for days that school isn't in session. |
Teachers are salaried with the expectation that they work X number of days a year (the number varies slightly but is usually around 190). That number does not include winter/spring/summer break. This is similar to someone with a 60% salaried position who is contracted to work Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They might come in on occasion on T/Th or even a weekend, just like teachers sometimes do. Teachers get far less personal/vacation leave than most other professionals, relative to the number of days they're contracted for. But they do get some. |
If I had tickets, I would take my kids out of school to go in a heartbeat! The teacher is a mother first, despite what you think. Can believe you actually were upset by this. It would be one thing for her to go to Disney world bc you can go anytime, but the Easter egg roll is once a year always Easter Monday. |
| What school system was open on Easter Monday? |
|
The only person who will take the impact on your child as their first priority is you so have you considered home schooling? You can be as consistent as you would like and never take any personal days. If not, please realize the teacher will always think about her family needs before your children which are probably well taken care of by a substitute or you (if you do not like the sub). That is the way things should be: family first then the job (the job is only taking second place because it is paying the family bills).
An office rate who attends as many family/children event as she possible could within the personal leave allotted to her (not a teacher) |
+1 from another teacher Personal days and sick days are to be used at the teacher's discretion. Criticism of your lazy colleagues' methods in the school building are a different issue. |
|
Good for her! That is wonderful.
Teaching is a job, just like your job, and teachers don't stop being parents just because they are teachers. |
Chill out OP. One school day out for the entire year (unless your DC is sick all year) is not going to hurt anyone. |
Same question... ? |
