That's called living up to your commitments at work. You want sympathy for that?

You are f'g nuts, teachers have families and personal lives too. Signed, not a teacher.

The teacher is complaining about having to buy a more expensive plane ticket that enables him/her to show up for work on time. Teachers work when school is in session, just like accountants work at tax time and waiters work on Saturday nights. It's the job you chose - you need to show up when school is in session. You have every BS holiday and break off - organize yourself so you show up for work when they kids are expected to be there.

I'm a lurker and not a teacher, but I agree that you are just nuts. Teachers do one of the most important jobs out there. They take care of and teach our children. Yet, they get paid significantly less per hour of work than most professions out there. If you want to have these unreasonable expectations for their taking on this job then you need to pay them either in money or in benefits. You don't get to have low school budgets for teacher pay and cut their benefits as well. The teachers unions negotiate these benefits into the system because of people like you who want to deny teachers basic workers rights.

For your example, tax season is about 2 months and waiters can take off Saturday nights. You are saying that teachers should not have be able to attend anything outside of their control for 9.5 months out of the year? It's easy enough for an accountant to ask family to avoid a 2 month period. You are saying that the family of teachers should not schedule family events except during summers or holidays? That no teachers should be able to attend their children's functions that occur during the school year? That teachers need to schedule critical medical events for the summer (have you *EVER* tried to schedule anything with a doctor?!? Most of the time, you have a limited set of times that you can schedule such events). You are completely unreasonable and very, very wrong.

Good post. Thank you.

Just one little correction: Teacher unions can't negotiate in VA. There is no collective bargaining.

I know right? Suffice it to say he makes significantly more than me!

Actually, what I'm saying is that we all have work commitments, and paying extra for a plane ticket that enables you to meet your commitments is not something that you should complain about. It is not praise-worthy, it is living up to your obligations. Many things I pay for are expensive - child care, tuition, insurance, etc - that I would prefer not to pay. But, since they are commitments I choose to make, I do not complain about them.

I don't think that was a complaint. I read it as a response to those who are saying the teacher should plan to miss a minimum amount of school days. It was like, "Hey. I even paid extra for a ticket so that I wouldn't have to miss Monday, so don't give me $hit for taking Friday off".
