Trump and the Muslim database

Well, the sad truth of it is that such a database probably already exists about everyone.

Not a chance, no-one gives a crap when it comes to mental healthcare so a database like that couldn't exist even if it wanted to.

I'm hardly saying that; Mr. Trump can certainly handle the media without my help. I had not seen Mr. Trump say that a Trump Administration "would absolutely implement such a thing." If you provide some citation for that rather surprising proposition, I shall recant forthwith. Otherwise, I think there is little to see here.

One correction. He did not say "absolutely", but rather "certainly". Watch the video here if you can:

For some reason the story changes the sequence of the quotes.

That's interesting. Listening to the exchange, my guess is that he will be able to walk that back as a misstatement. I found it hard to follow and had to listen to it a couple of times to understand, but of course I didn't see the context of the whole press conference. Will be interesting to see if it gets traction.

If you had trouble following that and had to listen to the first 20 seconds more than once, I'm not sure what to say...it couldn't have been said more clearly. "Beyond a data base we need X,Y,Z" "I would certainly implement that"....are those statements somehow vague to you?

Not denying he said it, of course. The question is whether there is available some sort of spin to allow him to weasel out of it by taking it back as an error. My guess is yes, but we will see.

That's not exactly true. Herschel Grynszpan killed a German diplomat, and it precipitated Kristallnacht. I am not suggesting that the Jews deserved this. I am saying the opposite - that the actions of a bad few should not justify oppressing the many. And racists can always find a pretext for their desires. They did it then, and I believe they are doing it now.

For months I saw conservative posters decry the terrible atrocities perpetrated by ISIS. And now a few months later, we turn away the very victims of these atrocities because we found a Syrian passport at the Paris attacks. Did you ever really care?

Well, hell, kill 6 million more then

I care about the Catholics being murdered and the fact that Obama has only brought in (and only plans to bring in) a small percentage compared to Muslims. When Glenn Beck has to personally raise money to re-settle Christians, there's a problem with this government.

When you try to invoke the actions of Glen Beck in relation to responsible governance, you have lost the argument.

Glenn Beck, who identifies as Mormon, wants to do a bit more than "re-settle" some Christians. He actually referenced "smuggling" individuals into the US, referencing some bridges across the Rio Grande -- not that you can trust most of the bat shit crazy that falls out of his mouth. I'm left wondering whether he considers the Syriac Orthodox Church as "Christian"?

He doesn't need to walk it back. His Amal is to blame the media, change the subject and then spout some equally stupid and utterly outrageous nonsense.

I am saddened by the Paris attacks and working near the White House as I do does worry me.

But I haven't felt truly frightened until I heard Trump call for a Muslim database today.

I talked to my Republican family members yesterday. All my stepmom wanted to go on and on about is how the hijab is a threat to our freedoms. Meanwhile one of the Republican front runners is actually suggesting a database so big government can track a religious minority.

I'm just. Speechless.

Specifically, that rejecting non-christians is unchristian.

The Teabagger crowd hangs on McCain's every word. He's quite inconsequential to the Islamophobe right-wing.

Trump is just now trying to walk this back:

I didn't suggest a database-a reporter did. We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America

Not exactly a walk back. Just disavowing that it was his idea. Count the number of times he mentions good management and his remark about how to sign up Muslims at their mosques.

Yeah, no doubt this is a bunch of hogwash. The reporter suggested the idea but Trump said he would certainly implement it.
