Trump wouldn't mind a Muslim registry, but he certainly opposes a gun registry:

He says people forced to participate in a gun registry "will have their privacy invaded and will place information in the hands of government officials that could be easily abused." I guess he's not worried that Muslims would have their privacy invaded and their information in the hands of government officials who might abuse it.

I think Trump thought the question was about visitors or immigrants and not current citizens. He was clearly goaded into it.

My give-a-fuck meter about this one is a zero and I'm not a Trump supporter at all and am sure he will not be the eventual nominee.

No, he didn't. The question was clear. The only acceptable response would've been "What an outrageous thing to suggest. I am open however to discussing with our intelligence and law enforcement the best ways of dealing with the threat we are facing from terrorism>"
