Impressed with Zendaya and her response to having her hair style associated with drug culture

Locs are not a white hippie thing, but much more prevalent in the black community as a normal hairstyle. Therefore if the only thing you think when you see you see a loc style is weed and patchouli, you're denigrating a whole natural hair choice of a race of people. Who already have enough pressure on hair choices without your misguided judgment.

Oh, Lord. Get over it! I actually stayed in a white hippie commune in the late '80s, and about half the kids had dreadlocks. Long, curly white hair that isn't brushed dreadlocks naturally. For that crowd, it was a very normal hairstyle, and it was a choice for them, just as hairstyle is a choice for anyone, white or black. But you wouldn't know that, because your own misguided judgment can't see beyond your own experience.

Wait, I can't see past my own experience? Look at the hypocrisy in what you wrote.

People need to chill out on this one.

G cannot be a racist. She works daily alongside a black man hosting E! News Daily so how could she even be racist against the black culture? Plus Fashion Police is a tongue-in-cheek type of show and nothing about it should be taken to heart.

It must be a slow news day for people to call G a racist. I think she is being used as a scapegoat and this is unfair.

She is just explaining her opinion and if a guy said this, no one would blink an eye.

Kelly Osbourne is a hypocrite. Double standard much??!

I was watching Fashion Police a few years back when they showed a Twitter Pic that Rhianna had posted on her Twitter. This was during the time period when she and Karruche Tran were fighting over Chris Brown. Well Rhianna had posted a pic on her Twitter of 2 rice cakes, a pair of sunglasses along with a pair of earrings. The pic was clearly referencing Karruche's Asian heritage and mocking it.

What did Kelly Osbourne say about that? Just a brief sentence. "Oh, I think what Rhianna did was horrible, but....." then gave her a free pass and moved on.

So why is she giving Guiliana Rancic grief over what she said about Zendaya's hair when what Rhianna did was much worse? If she gave Rhianna a free pass, why not Guilianna?

I guess it is okay to mock Asians, but not Black people in her narrow world.

My fourteen year old has better analytical skills than you. I work with a mysogynist everyday. I can assure you that he thinks less of women, regardless of the race. I work with him and he works with me because we both want our jobs.

No, there is no hypocrisy, because I didn't say that dreadlocks are not a thing in the black community. I said the combination of dreadlocks, patchouli, and weed are a white hippie thing. If you really want to claim weed as your own, go ahead, but I don't think that's your goal here.

Just because when you threw the rock you didn't mean to bust me in my face, doesn't make it hurt any less when it did! It's like some silly game that SOME white people like to play, I'm not you, do not have the same experience as you, do not live in your skin, but I can tell you what should hurt your damn feelings. The bottom line is that there a lot of folk out there that are too damn lazy to think before they speak and do not want to hear it when people call them on their shit. If it does not affect you then it isn't real.
Call it racist, predjudice, stereotyping, I don't give a d***, the bottom line is that it was insensitive and ill-advised and she very nicely got her bony ass handed back to her.
BOOM!

I have a bony ass and am VERY offended by your post. I would like a public (DCUM) apology for your hurtful comment.

Black folk of all different backgrounds, SES status, educational status and profession wear dreadlocks. It's is a hairstyle choice one finds throughout all levels and types of black people, and especially women. I know many black women and a few black men with dreadlocks in my personal life and work environment. I am upper middle class, white and a lawyer. Zendaya's hair seemed totally normal to me as its a hairstyle I see in the course of my typical DC life. I didn't even think twice when I saw a picture of her on the red carpet. Just thought she looked really pretty. Her hairstyle was just a pretty hairstyle but not unusual in any way.

One rarely sees white folk with dreadlocks anywhere but on a hippy commune. It is just not a typical hairstyle for white people across all levels of society.

To me, therefore, it seems pretty clear that GR does not spend much time around white people if she felt this hairstyle was unusual enough to make a refer me to pot and patchouli. That is why is sounded off, or racist, as it seemed like she lives in a world where "normal" peoe don't wear dreadlocks.

Wasn't that her exact point???!!!!

No, you dont get it.... if your LIFE is DIVERSE and you live in the REAL WORLD (i.e. folks of all kinds of skin color, hair styles, SES levels and culture) Zendaya's hairstyle would not CAUSE a REACTION/COMMENT from you as you would be USED TO SEEING IT. I see women with this hairstyle ALL THE TIME in my life. Zendaya's cute look didn't seem "different" to me at all (e.g. "something I had rarely seen before that caused me to associate it with ONLY ONE STEREOTYPE)!!!!! So many of you are just clueless. Really. Get out in the real world folks. It is a lot more interesting than just long straight Caucasian hair everywhere.

It's amusing to me that those who claim they're being stereotyped are the MOST likely to generalize. I have seen white dreadlocks outside hippie communes. White dreadlocks don't even turn my head. Nor do AA dreadlocks. So I, personally, am used to seeing them on all sorts of people. Just because you are not does not mean that your experience is the same as everyone else's.

HUH?
Did you read the post to which you are responding - the poster was saying that they are used to seeing all kinds of women with locs.
Art thou confused?

I'm not racist but I see how someone could make a joke about dreadlocks associated with patchouli and weed. I was thinking the same thing. She looks like a hippie. A black hippie as much as a white hippie. I could've seen Giuliana making the same comment if a white chick had the same outfit and dreads.

PP here. I guess what I'm trying to say is that on this satirical show they make comments like this all the time. Joan would've said it first. And actually as soon as it came out of guiliana's mouth - Kathy chimed in. No one is giving Kathy any flack. I don't think the comment was racist at all.

Are you serious?

I used to work alongside a Klans member. He proudly told me his whole family was in the Klan (I'm a black female).
Racist people aren't hiding out in some remote part of the country. They are in every industry all across the globe.
