Impressed with Zendaya and her response to having her hair style associated with drug culture

As a black person I'm so over the race card being played at the wrong time.

I disagree. Dreadlocks are most commonly associated with Rastafarian culture and black people. Sure, some white folks have dreads, I even work with one, but its just not that common. Dreds (or locs as Zendaya calls them) are also not nearly as closely related to hippies as they are to black Rastafarians and Bob Marley fans. Now, if she had said "makes me think of the Grateful Dead, patchouli and ankle bracelets" it would have been okay but, she didn't.

I will concede that Guliana may not have meant it as racists but she should have thought about it a LOT more before she said it. Just dumb to say something like that. To me it makes it clear that Guliana should not be talking on live tv, she isn't thoughtful or intelligent enough.

There is a STRONG weed culture for Rastafarians.

There's a STRONG alcohol culture for Irish, but you would never hear someone say of a celebrity with straight red hair "I think she smells of booze."

I spent a month on tour with Bob Marley. I never smoked pot but got high from just riding in the tour bus.

Patchouli, dreadlocks, and weed are white hippie things, especially to someone Guiliana's age. It was a stupid comment, but it wasn't racist.

I'm black and I smoke weed and love patchouli lol

I read Guiliana's comment before I saw Zendaya's response or any of the backlash. The exact thought that went through my head was "damn, bobble head just basically called her a dirty hippie." Not because of the locs, but because of the patchouli reference.

That it would be interpreted as a racial slur never crossed my mind.

I'm her age and I have to disagree.

Isn't she the same person who referred to one of the Jenner girls as being "edgy" or some other positive thing for wearing dreds a few months back? I might be more inclined to side with the people who say this isn't a race thing if there wasn't this history of it being good when a white girl does it, but apparently dirty when a black girl does. Not the GR was having overtly racists thoughts, but more the latent racism that plays out in more insidious ways.

I think of patchouli and I think of the Grateful Dead. If she had stopped with the patchouli comment this wouldn't have been an issue.

Jokes about people celebrities being drunk are a dime a dozen.

No, but you might hear someone say "I think of Jamison" or someone with an Italian accent and saying "I think of a nice bottle of Chianti"which is actually more comparable since GR didn't say she thought of someone being high/stoned whatever in reference to the locs.

You yourself are saying dreads are closely related to Bob Marley and Rastafarians. So how can you say it is racist when you KNOW that dreads remind people of Bob Marley and Bob Marley brings to mind thoughts of weed? I think you are missing the point. I believe the problem with Guliana Rancic's statement is that she's proven herself unknowledgeable about style. Zendaya looks pretty and put-together, there's nothing about her style that should make one assume she's a pot head. Guliana's comment reminds me of somebody in the 1960s saying boys with long hair are homosexual; or my mother assuming anybody with tattoos is an ex-prisoner. Get with the times, lady! Zendaya is wrong to assume Guliana meant anything racist by her comment, but she was spot-on to point out other dreadlocked distinguished people.
