My 51 pound three-year-old girl is not overweight, just BIG

OP,
How did he phrase it?

A huge child, in weight and height, can have a hormonal imbalance and needs to be evaluated.

Even if they have no detectable issue, children like yours need to be closely observed. The minute she stops growing or becomes less athletic, you are going to have a problem on your hands.

I advise you to start eating better at home. Less sugar and fat, more whole grains, veggies and fruit.

Are you Asian?

I'm guessing from Nepal or similar where they have a carb heavy diet (veggies too, but a lot grain based).

I think it's worth consulting with a pediatric endocrinologist. I would be concerned about heading off early puberty honestly.

My thought is maybe he is worried about a hormone imbalance that is causing the extremes and not just simply genetics from mom and dad?

Ask if that's a concern.

Sometimes doctors can be in their own heads , charts, and stats they don't think of the obvious or communicate effectively.

What you say about ethnic background is true to an extent, and your ethnic background may not be represented in the figures being looked at.

51 lbs is heavy for a 42 inch child. My 4yo is 43 inches and 36 lbs. admittedly, she is thin, but 15 lbs is a huge difference on such a small frame

Our ped is really great about looking at both height and weight -- I would understand being concerned if your DD weren't in the upper percentile for height as well, but it sounds like she's also tall. My kids are the same way, upper percentiles for both height and weight and our ped (whom I respect immensely) wasn't concerned. Also, my DS gained 18 pounds between his 8th and 9th check-ups, but he had also gained three inches so she was unfazed. The next year he only grew 1/2 inch and hardly a pound / so she was right not to be concerned...it was a growth spurt.

Op's kid is way more heavy than tall.

Exactly. Compared to what I know of other kids, the weight being that high is very surprising and not at all accounted for by the height.

Are you and your DH overweight?

My almost 6yo boy doesn't even weigh 51 pounds. I feel like the normal kid looks somewhat skinny. I was just in DS's kindergarten class yesterday and most of the class looks thin including my son. Then there are 2 girls who are bigger. They are significantly fatter than the other kids in the class.

You may think your daughter is just big but compare her to other 5 year old girls. Most of the girls we know are very skinny.

This. OP use the calculator on webmd and read the results. They aren't great and explain your doctors concern. http://www.webmd.com/parenting/raising-fit-kids/weight/bmi/bmi-calculator

I just plugged my DS info on this calculator and he's considered obese on it. He's extremely tall and lean - you can see his ribs and hip bones poking out. He towers above kids several years older than he is. I brothers who are over 6'8" and they are extremely skinny.

These BMI calculators are obviously missing something!!

Or maybe you typed in the numbers wrong.

Folks just don't want to accept the truth. The calculators don't lie. You can't go by how you look.

Calculations don't like, but a kid who is tall and skinny is not going to come out on those BMI calculators as being overweight. It is pretty easy to mistype the height. Typing 48" as 4'8" for instance if you just aren't thinking. Check your measurements and input the data again.

What were you expecting, OP?

You just keep thinking whatever you're thinking, but don't complain when she's an obese teen. And don't complain when if she develops heart disease as a young adult or has difficulty getting pregnant when she wants to.

look at it this way, OP. 51 lbs is about 50%-tile of a 7-yo girl. and the height of a 50%-tile 7-yo? 48 inches; or, 51 lbs is about 75%-tile for a 6-yo girl, and the height of a 75%-tile 6-yo girl is 46.5 inches; or, for 5-yo girls, 95%-tile weight is 51 lbs, and height is 45.5 inches.

i have a boy like yours, OP, off the chart heavy and tall since he's 4. he's still obese now at 9-yo but his BMI has finally come down after years of encouraging healthy eating, and lots of exercises.

My 4 yo is 41 inches and 35 lbs. your daughter has 20 lbs on my son.

There could be genetic reasons as well. Marian syndrome...others. It's very much cause for concern.

^^sorry, that should have said Marfan Syndrome.
