When did strollers become a status symbol?

Of course, the Bugaboo/Uppababy crowd thinks that $250 buys you a proletarian stroller.

People may think I'm a "snob" for having a Bugaboo stroller, but I am then glad to remind myself that I'm not hunched over or huffing and puffing up the hill or catching on a sidewalk crack like those with Gracos and MacLarens. It was worth the $900.

I'm sorry, PP, but I'm going to assume you don't have much experience with the Uppababy Vista, because it kicks the pants off the brands you mentioned for maneuverability and durability. It folds easily, rides well, and is all around a wonderful stroller, with great rear tires and details down to the quiet magnetic check-in flap. It's an entirely different class of stroller than the City Mini GT. I understand people who take issue with the Uppa price, and its corresponding expensive accessories, and I respect those who just won't spend that much on a stroller. But pretending you "much prefer" a City Mini for any other reason is silliness. I'm not into status symbols. I don't wear expensive brand name clothes. My economy car is seven years old. But everyday, I am glad that I splurged on the Uppa.

Not PP, but I like my City Mini GT. We chose it specifically because it was the lightest weight stroller than had an adjustable handle height. I'm short (and have back problems), and pretty much every single other stroller (including Uppababy) we tried had handles that were too high. (Incidentally, that's also why my umbrella is a MacLaren Quest...which I happened to find for $65 on craigslist.) I also have the BOB that's made only for REI...only BOB with an adjustable handle. That said, everyone has their own needs and should choose a stroller that works for them.

Nobody is arguing that they *need* an expensive stroller. We're just pointing out that people buy expensive strollers for reasons other than status.
Don't confuse the argument.

We are from NYC and everyone in Manhattan has a $1000 stroller. Don't think it is much of a statue symbol.

Now my kids are older. We used a double city mini for a long time. Now we occasionally bring our $20 umbrella stroller from Babies R Us.

We just got back from vacation and I think it looks silly when parent travel with a Bugaboo. It's like they want to show off their stroller. We have had the Orbit, Bugbaboo, Maclaren, double Maclaren, City Mini, Double City Mini and now just use the $20 umbrella stroller.

We had both an Orbit and Bugaboo. I always thought the Uppa was a step lower.

We used our double city mini much longer than both the Orbit and Bugaboo. Many people use the City Mini as their go to stroller because of the one hand fold. You don't know what you are talking about.

No, it wasn't.

lol. You seem very defensive about your stroller choice.

The uppababy vista is all of the things you stated but you forgot one thing......it is extremely heavy! It also takes up a lot of trunk space. And forget about airplane travel with it. I have one and within 6 months I bought a jeep stroller for $50 on Amazon. I love it so much more - so light, so easy to open and close, and so much easier to get in and out of the car. Not to mention it takes up so much less space. The uppababy is great for walking around the neighborhood but I was very disappointed that after all that money, I still needed additional strollers.

I purposely avoid the moms who have high end strollers. Who wants that kind of shallow in their lives?

15:56 here. This makes me feel even better about my Uppa splurge, and I always appreciate the irony of being called "shallow" by someone who uses stroller choices to select her friends. Thanks, PP.

Exactly!

What do people think of Bumbleride? It is cute and about half the price of Bugaboo. I am looking at strollers currently and would love a Bugaboo Donkey, but it just isn't in the cards for us. I definitely want a bassinet attachment.

I have always wanted a bumbleride. I think their strollers are really stylish. But they are very hard to see in person.

There. Fixed it for you.

I bought a Bugaboo Frog in early 2006 for my son and LOVED it! I had/have an SUV, so it was no problem getting it in the back and breakdown is super quick and easy. I researched strollers and it was my favorite - as a general rule, I couldn't care less what others think about what I have or what they have. I still have the stroller and it still looks new - the fabric washes like a dream and isn't stained or faded.

Totally worth the cost, which I think was around $800 -850 in 2006.
