I had refrigerated pie crusts from the supermarket and frozen ones from Trader Joe's. The refrigerated ones were fine, sealed in a bag and rolled out fine. The TJ ones were just rolled onto a sheet of plastic (not sealed in a bag) and then in the box, frozen. I used these the day after I bought them and the edges were very crumbly. I don't see these lasting long in the freezer at all, exposed like that!
Even thawing them per the directions, they completely broke when I rolled them. I basically had to mash them into a ball and reroll them from the start. They should just sell them as a ball of dough, seriously. Once I did that, they tasted great! Taste for both=awesome. Not sure about price difference. Refrigerated definitely less hassle! |

I didn't do the turkey but some sides. Tried the Alton Brown glazed carrots recipe using ginger ale. Was just meh.
I made a white chocolate bread pudding (a surprise for my 80-year-old uncle who loves bread pudding) and it was amazing. I loved hearing everyone comment when they took that first bite. Made turkey shepherd's pie the next day and it was fantastic. |
| Our food was all delicious but we didn't have enough forks!! Kids had to use plastic and my mother wouldn't leave it alone. |
| For our second Thanksgiving, things came out really well! DH did a great job with the turkey, I discovered stuffing can be made in the crock pot, mashed potatoes made the day before, and gravy came out well. My only disappointment was making foodie cranberry sauce - the vanilla was overpowering. The second batch I made, of basic cranberry sauce, was much more to my liking. |
Like a PP, my turkey was way undercooked on the bottom. I had just bought a meat thermometer to guard against that and the breast and thigh had the right temp according to Alton Brown's receipe but the underside not so much Anyway, maybe I should try cooking the bird upside down as someone mentioned.

I. was. joking!!! |
| Turkey was done pretty quickly at only 12 pounds and using Alton Brown's method, so we had to hustle up with our sides. Made a "southern sweet potato" casserole that came out great, made spinach balls that were dry and tasteless. Though we had plenty of fun saying, "do you think my balls are too dry? maybe try some gravy on your balls? etc. |
| We tried Martha Stewart's pumpkin pie recipe but will be going back to the Libby's label recipe for next year. |
PP, can you share your white chocolate bread pudding recipe? I'd love to make this for Christmas! |
| We also had a too-quick cooking turkey (15.5 pounds, cooked in about 3 hours). And we did the stuffing in the crock-pot, which was awesome. It was the food magazine fig-glazed one and it was delicious. |
| My three kids (ages 4, 4, and 6) do not like pumpkin or pecan pie, They will just eat the whipped cream. So this year, after dinner, we made s'mores on the back deck. Best idea ever! |
| I only made cranberry gimlets, which were a hit! |
Well that's good, sorry to snap. But this is DCUM and you just never know.. |
This is absolutely delicious and soooo easy. The critical thing is to watch what you actually put the bread pudding in to cook. I ended up using my fondue dish and then putting that in a pyrex baking dish in the oven with the hot water. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/white-chocolate-bread-pudding-recipe.html Enjoy! |

On the dry turkey - just pour a little broth or watered-down pan dripping on it.
Our frozen turkey was half frozen in the morning..finally got defrosted enough to get the dang plastic bag out. Ready to eat at 7:20pm..I was starving and cranky by then, but everything tasted great
