I had been spending 300 dollars a month on activities and classes for the previous two years and 200 dollars a month from ages 2 to 3. I went back and looked how much I spent one rainy day and it came out to almost 12,000 dollars! I didn't send my youngest to any classes and put the 12,000 dollars into a 529 for him.

Yep. They don't remember any of it until they are older. A family member of mine spends a ton on sports for her two year old.... waste of money.

I don't think it was a waste but they add up. We always did gymnastics and for the gross motor skills I found it good. Karate for little ones has been a huge waste and we are dropping it. Love it but not for $40 a class for group classes plus testing.

What age was a waste for karate? Considering signing up my 4 year old

Waste at that age if it costs much of anything.

I've spent money on baby swim and music classes, but don't feel like they were a total waste as they got us out of the house, and I learned early on to really, really limit extra-curriculars (which has helped now that I have 2 kids who are a little older).

The extended warranty on our car comes to mind, though.

Also, lots and lots of clothing over the years. I really wish I had just invested in several high-quality basics and skipped a lot of impulse buys. And I'm not even someone who spends a lot on clothes anyway.

I've always wondered what's this cost? Are there yearly minimums?

I can't remember, there was a fee to join and then a monthly fee on top of that. I feel like the monthly fee for a couple was definitely $300 a month and we weren't using it at all. This was about 10 years ago.

a house. only in this country is this considered the ultimate life dream. colossal waste of time & money. and we purchased a moderate home that was nicely renovated.

5 dollar smoothie I bought from Starbucks this morning for my five year old. She took one sip and said she changed her mind- she didn't want it. She is very picky. I should have known better!

I use my rice maker almost daily, and my stand mixer weekly and love them both!

Waste of money for me:

$200 to take my 4yo to see the ABT Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center. I loved it, she loved it, but two years later she barely remembers it.

Our first house - should never have bought it.

Clothes, shoes, etc. that I never wear but can't return.

Agree about the baby swim and Gymboree. My son is 2 now and it is really tough when we don't have a planned activity for him in the mornings on the weekend. He has a lot of energy and it isn't always feasible to go to the park or other outdoor activity especially in the winter, rain or hot summer days. Also, Gymboree to me is more for socializing. We didn't have any friends with kids our son's age and we were able to meet people and see them regularly. Worth $82/month.

Should have added what I thought were wastes of money - my biggest one is the glider I bought for the nursery. $700 and I hardly used it - preferred to nurse in my bed or in the living room. Second is our uppababy vista. It is so heavy and takes up so much space in the trunk of my sedan that I only use it for walking around the neighborhood. Bought a $50 Jeep stroller that I love.

Wait till about age 5.5-6 when they move from the preschool class to the older class. Otherwise they have to start all over when they move up. I like gymnastics much better for that age group. We may stick with Karate but go to a much cheaper place.
