Local government elected official.
State legislators (senators/congressmen/assemblymen/etc) make between $15-50K except for 3-4 states (with California the big exception at $90K). While many people look down on them, many people think they get paid closer to what US Congressional salaries are rather than what local jurisdictions pay. People are often fooled thinking that winning the election pays big money, but it doesn't. Firefighters, police and military are positions I would say are prestigious but low paying. |
Not one of these has a private sector equivalent. |
That's not completely true. There are related fields. For example, there are private security firms that use the same skills as police. There are groups like Blackwater that hire ex-military to contract out a lot of the same services that military hre out. Besides, what difference does it make whether there is a private sector equivalent. The topic was low paying prestige jobs. There was no qualification that it be a job with a private sector equivalent. |

You think the military is a high prestige job?
|
Definitely journalism, if you don't work for Bloomberg.
|
Well, I would say if you are a naval aviator, a USAF fighter pilot or special ops, then that is prestigious. Just a run-of-the-mill dogface, maybe not so much! |
So true. |
it depends what you do there. run of the mill analyst in the DI - eh, it didn't feel like it. or program engineer in DST - not really - didn't feel like it. |
Plus you get to blow sh*t up. |
| Most lawyers. |
| World Bank and IMF, especially if you got a job there as an American. |
There's a lot of respect to members of the military. Think of all of the campaigns about "Thank you for your service" and the stories of people doing nice things for servicemen and servicewomen in their daily lives. Think of the outrage over the recent injustices at the VA. Yes, I think there is a "widespread respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of a perception of their achievements or quality." We respect their heroism, and their selflessness to volunteer and sacrifice so much for the rest of us to live our lives of comfort and security. |
Yet, at the same time how many of us want our children to join the military? I had an argument with my DD. One of my DD's classmates did the full IB diploma and she is going to the military, while other classmates go to Cornell or Stanford. I said maybe said classmates parents can't afford to send her to Stanford or Cornell, so she is taking the route that she is taking to pay for her education. Not everyone has your advantages. "Well, I still think it was stupid," she replied. So, perhaps I up the amount of money DD will need to pay for college out of her own pocket to see how she manages? Of course, it doesn't help that my ex constantly berates the military, going so far as to call my decorated veteran father a "killer of little Vietnamese children." |
