You think the military is a high prestige job?
There's a lot of respect to members of the military. Think of all of the campaigns about "Thank you for your service" and the stories of people doing nice things for servicemen and servicewomen in their daily lives. Think of the outrage over the recent injustices at the VA. Yes, I think there is a "widespread respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of a perception of their achievements or quality." We respect their heroism, and their selflessness to volunteer and sacrifice so much for the rest of us to live our lives of comfort and security.
Yet, at the same time how many of us want our children to join the military? I had an argument with my DD. One of my DD's classmates did the full IB diploma and she is going to the military, while other classmates go to Cornell or Stanford. I said maybe said classmates parents can't afford to send her to Stanford or Cornell, so she is taking the route that she is taking to pay for her education. Not everyone has your advantages. "Well, I still think it was stupid," she replied. So, perhaps I up the amount of money DD will need to pay for college out of her own pocket to see how she manages? Of course, it doesn't help that my ex constantly berates the military, going so far as to call my decorated veteran father a "killer of little Vietnamese children."
