IOWA test results and it's correlation to TJHSST

What kind of post AP calculus or post AP science courses your "4.0" TJ junior taking? Is the "4.0" unweighted or weighted?

OP here:

Though I know that TJ has many students that are advanced in math, I just don't see how being placed in geometry in 9th grade at TJ can be at a huge disadvantage (as some are claiming). In other words, if this student has been accepted into TJ and placed in 9th grade geometry and has been bringing straight A's for instance...they become and instant failure at tj? doesnt make sense to me.

Weighted, FCPS doesn't calculate unweighted.

funny that's the point I was trying to make too!

I don't get what difference this makes? The point is the kid is doing well at TJ weighted or unweighted 4.0 is a very good GPA and especially at TJ.

Student with 4.0 Weighted GPA at TJ will be in the bottom 35 percent of his class. UVA and W&M requires 4.3 minimum weighted GPA for even TJ kids. That is why many feel that TJ actually hurts the applicant's chances at UVA and W&M if the student will not be in the top 40%.

Most TJ kids have a very good idea what their unweighted GPAs are and many colleges look at the rigor of the courses and both the weighted and unweigted GPA in evaluating applicants.

Ok, makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

Even VT wants around 4.15 weighted GPA from TJ kids so that's rough.

Only few TJ kids graduate with ALL As meaning 4.0 unweighted GPA. The assumption you are making above is a big assumption. ALL As students will be in the top 1% (assuming take take the average number of APs or post APs).

> Geometry 103 3.1% 69 14.4%
Total 3304** 480 100.00%

Above shows 65/1,856 (3.5%) were admitted for Algebra I applicants, 346/1345 (25.7%) were accepted for Geometry applicants and and 69/103 (69%) were accepted for higher than Geometry applicants.

It is more skewed towards applicants with >Geometry now compared to 2010.

Thank you for the correct interpretation of data and concise summarization. Does anyone know if further breakdown of ">Geometry" is available that shows the acceptance rates for applicants w/ Algebra II, PreCalc, or Calc?

More importantly though, the data show that approximately 70% of each accepted freshman class has completed geometry in 8th grade, meaning that about that same percentage is taking Algebra II as 9th graders. The majority of freshmen at TJ over the last few years have taken TJ's version of Algebra II. (In the future, TJ is implementing its own math sequence, which is discussed on the TJ website.)

Where is this number from?

The Geometry class at TJ now.

It is still oddly, a crap shoot. There are a few kids taking > greater than Algebra II who do not get in.
