My parents are European and drinking while pregnant (lightly, very lightly) doesn't carry much stigma. I had several talks with my husband when he'd freak out over me having a glass of wine so I did a significant amount of research on this.
Full on FAS is seen in women who drink AT LEAST 15 glasses of booze per week. Women who drink less than 3 glasses a week actually show improved results for their kids, so a little wine here and there is okay. You obviously drank much more than that but it was early on and you've stopped. I'd lay off alcohol from this point forward, and the other posters are right on - there is definitely a nutritional component to this so hike up your Omega 3's and eat a very very healthy diet and you can greatly improve the baby's outcomes. However, we have to be frank here and if you're drinking 6 shots of vodka several times a week at 40 years of age, you're an alcoholic. Obviously drinking while pregnant is bad but if you're drinking like that with children at home, you're still harming your children and just as importantly, yourself. Take this as a big warning from the universe and get thee to a counselor to get the help you need. |
Yep, totally agree with both of these - you are not likely to have done your kid harm (though it is possible, if one of your weeks of drinking was quite a bit heavier than the others). But OP, for the sake of your family, and yourself, please get help. AA is free. If that's not your thing, go to therapy (there is also low-cost therapy if needed) - better yet, do both. GL. |
No one knows for sure how much you can drink, and not make your child suffer because of it. |
Drinking twice a week during the holiday season would get you laughed out of an AA meeting. Sounds like a full social life. |
Mostly I'm just jealous you could drink during your first trimester. I was so sick even water made me puke.
Also statistically your kid is likely to be completely fine. Ask your doctor, but IMO prolonged anxiety is worse for you than vodka. Although I'd switch to a glass or two of wine instead of vodka while you're pregnant. |
Almost every pregnant woman I've known drank during the first trimester before finding out they were pregnant. None have babies with FAS. You will be fine. |
Why did you revive this old thread to say this? |
I said to my doctor, "I had a bit of alcohol while I was pregnant, but before I knew I was pregnant."
Without pausing she said, "you and every woman ever." |
I'm sure your baby will be fine. Congratulations! |
You have a serious alcohol problem. Get help because two small children need a sober mother. |
I drank almost an entire bottle of wine the night before I got a positive pregnancy test. All is fine. |
You suck. And actually, we do. The FAS studies were done with HEAVY drinkers. We know for sure that a glass of wine every so often won't hurt your baby. |
Who keeps reviving all these ancient threads like this one?? I'm surprised the "swimming with dolphins while pregnant" thread isn't brought back to life. |
