Thoughts on Wash U in St. Louis?

Anonymous
No one in his or her right mind would or should reject admission to Stanford or Yale to attend at WashU. WTF?

Why don't you share your "statistical data manipulation" conspiracy theory with USNews so they can bust WASH U? [but you should remove your tin foil helmet before meeting with them - it damages credibility]

Ask the admissions director at Wash U how it determines the number of "total applicants"?

1) Filling out a postcard
2) Driving by campus
3) Peering through classroom window.

Wash U's poor yield belies its selectivity.

From the admissions website:

Washington University accepts the Common Application and requires a few simple supplemental questions (no supplemental essay).

We will also waive the application fee if you students who have absolutely no chance of being admitted will fill out part 1 of the application.

Part 1: Last Name_____ First Name______

Thank you for applying. Your rejection notice will soon follow.

I turned down a huge, no-loans scholarship at Wash U and went to a prestigious East Coast SLAC (from which I later dropped out), and I alwayd regretted it profoundly. Wash U is excellent, and only moving up in the rankings. It is well funded and the alums are loyal to a fault; I know multiple recent grads who speak truly well of it.

The funny responses are from the people who try to make this school sound better than it is.

+1. St. Louis? Really?

It's a very nice place to go to school. I went there. The campus is beautiful and the surrounding neighborhoods are fun. It's MUCH less dangerous than the area around University of Chicago.

Every person I have known who went to Wash U is Jewish. Coincidence.

Oh come on. Hyde Park is a nice little bubble of safe area in the South Side. Just don't stray out of the safe parts of Hyde Park and into the ghetto and you're fine.

Yes. The people I know who went there are Catholic, Methodist and Agnostic. Go figure.

I would actually say it varies street by street. Doesn't necessarily have to be entirely ghetto. You only need one house with drug dealers to change up the safety of a block.

Everyone I know who went to Wash U is black or Asian. Hmmm.

I also worked on the U of C campus, in the office of the VP of Nursing for the hospital. It's a freakin' war zone. It's a beautiful campus, but it's not particularly safe. The neighborhood comes to campus, ya know? We had some teenage girls crash a stolen car on campus, many students mugged for backpacks and bikes and electronics, countless problems with weapons on patients in the hospital, etc.

Wash U. has always had a very diverse student body. They admitted people without regard to race or religion at a time when the Ivies were trying to stay as WASPy as possible.

Interesting. Me too. About 7 people, and they don't know each other.

That is my point

I suppose. I grew up in a very safe North Shore suburb of Chicago, but one of my good friends lived in Hyde Park (her father was a professor at U of C). They knew which blocks/neighborhoods to avoid, but there were several areas in Hyde Park that we were perfectly comfortable and safe wandering around in as a group of teenage/college kids in the dark. So not all of the area surrounding Hyde Park is particularly dangerous, although I'll admit, some parts are sketchy.
