I grew up in a very safe North Shore suburb of Chicago, but one of my good friends lived in Hyde Park (her father was a professor at U of C). They knew which blocks/neighborhoods to avoid, but there were several areas in Hyde Park that we were perfectly comfortable and safe wandering around in as a group of teenage/college kids in the dark.
