I went to Wash U and I am not black, Asian or Jewish. I loved it!!!!! Seriously, best years of my life. They are concerned about rankings and perception (no denying that), so they treat the students like gold. I have never encountered a happier group of people as a result. We lived in gorgeous new dorms with private bathrooms and rooms, ate fantastic food, and our professors were by and large great. As an east coaster I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved Clayton. I maybe went to downtown STL ten times in my years there. Clayton is great though- wonderful restaurants, parks, community center etc.
I was in for a rude awakening when I went to grad school elsewhere, haha. |
| Washington U. has had an excellent reputation -- stretching to New England -- for decades. |
| 19:19 WHAT? The Wash U. alum I know are a.) intellectual, cultured but not cash-flow affluent African American and b.) old money WASP. |
It's a very diverse place.

Wash U has a gorgeous campus. And close to Forest Park which is fabulous - great art museum. Fun neighborhoods nearby.
My siblings went there in the 80s and 90s and it seems like most of their friends were not from the midwest. I ended up going to an Ivy but even back then I remembered classmates commenting that it was a "great school" when I told them where my siblings went. |
Ditto. I grew up next to Wash U and only now, having looked at a zillion schools for my own kids, do I realize how much it has to offer beyond academics. GO CARDINALS!!! |
| Do most of the grads stay in the midwest? I've run across maybe 2 grads in the DC area. I never met one when living in the LA and NYC areas. |

Washington University has some of the highest SAT scores out there. Higher than most of the Ivies.
It does offer admission to more students and has a lower yield for it's admissions, so I suppose it's "less selective" in that sense. I think that lower yield is do entirely to it's location and to snotty people from the East Coast who can't imagine going to school in the Midwest, much less St. Louis. Numbers here: http://www.businessinsider.com/colleges-with-the-highest-sat-scores-2013-4#6-washington-university-in-st-louis-21 It's a beautiful campus, in a nice urban neighborhood. It has a world class faculty. It's full of top notch students. |
Yawn. Stop trying so hard. |
| I think Wash U might be a stretch for DC, but it's her current first choice. If your DC fit into this category, what other schools were you looking at. |
Middle tier Ivies, Duke, Chicago, northwestern. |
So DC's scores are nearly that hight, hmmm? |
It wasn't my DCs first choice and DC was wait-listed. Some other options Emory, Michigan, BC, Penn, USC, Northwestern. |
Is USC really mentioned in the same breadth as the others you list? |
It's an odd list. Michigan and BC aren't even Top 25, but Penn is Top 10. Emory, Northwestern and Penn are ranked higher and quite different. Michigan and USC are HUGE schools with big time sports programs, large class size and major research facilities. Very different from the other schools. |
