Is MCPS Superintendent Starr stupid?

There is nothing spedial about going to the School of Education at Harvard. Tens of thousands do for a remake and the Harvard degree. The bar is quite low. It's probably the easiest department to get into after a few years teaching in elementary and middle school. Equivalent to an online executive MBA degree ... a dime a dozen!

Harvard LAW, BUSINESS, MEDICINE, ECONOMICS, MATH is at one tail end of the HARVARD DISTRIBUTION CURVE and the SCHOOL OF EDUCATION the other tail of the distribution. Now that's language Mr. Starr may understand?

If we get rid of all school of educations in this country, we will see big improvement in k12 education.

Ed school is being run by people with no common sense. No other country let the school of education type has as much power as we do in terms of education policy.

He was absolutely NOT a mediocre student

Can you prove it? Or was he the typical MCPS honor roll student who failed the end of year bench mark exams.

Nope, that's not how it works. The original assertion was that he was a mediocre student. So prove that he was.

The citation is above you.

?

You think that I will be unable to understand a citation showing that education degrees from Harvard are a dime a dozen? Humor me and give it a try.

The bottom line is test scores.

A "solitary" teacher who is excellent in the classroom and who has good scores will make the entire school look good. A mediocre teacher who has great PR will not.

Sometimes we place a high value on collaboration when it oftentimes can amount to nothing.

If collaborative measures lead to excellent planning and data analysis that impacts teaching, then it's all good. But sadly, there are few administrators who seem to understand that successful collaboration is a result of effective teaming, which means groups can take MONTHS to gel, and can storm several times during a period. It's not just about being pleasant.

Signed,
former administrator/current consultant and trainer

I am a principal (not in MCPS), and would rather hire the bright teacher who may not know all the teaching strategies but is a great collaborator over the teacher who can teach really well in the classroom, but doesn't get along with anyone.

I can work with the less-experienced teacher and teach her great teaching strategies. That's easy. What's really difficult is getting someone who doesn't like/want to collaborate to change. We have too much work to do it alone. Teaching can no longer be a "lonely" profession where you close your classroom door and do your own thing. There are some professions where this okay, but more and more jobs that our current high students will be competing for require knowing how to collaborate.

I taught 9 skills for a long time. So I can make sense of what PP posted.

And what PP is saying is that we can't possibly allow a person TRAINED in education to run an educational system. Educators obviously don't have the skills and knowledge to run a system.

But of course we let attorneys run law firms and doctors run their practices.

But educators should NEVER make policy for other educators! how absurd!

What do WE know after all? We're just a bunch of dumb asses!

No, he's an idealogue, bent on denying that kids need different levels of instruction.

Schools of Educations are liberal indoctrination factories where it is taught that reducing inequality, the gap between high and low achievers, is more important than teaching each student to their level or aggregate performance. Superintendent Starr is a product of this system. Rest assured if you are unsatisfied with the results, it is because you are a racist who does not want your white child taught alongside children of color, or because your white privilege cannot understand the societal need for your child to make sacrifices for the greater good of reducing inequality.
