Peapod Delivery Guy Wants a Tip

Anonymous
We use Fresh Direct but usually get the unattended delivery option in case I have stepped out for a few minutes. Are you supposed to leave a tip in that situation?

OP, you are cheap or are you really so poor you can't afford an extra $5 to the leap of guy? My guess is not so were back to cheap.

THIS. And keep your two year old away from the groceries. These are delivery people, they aren't there to organize your stuff for you or parent your child. You need to pay someone else to do those things for you.

We are generous tippers because DH grew up in the restaurant industry, because we know how little service workers make, how hard they have to work, how obnoxious some people can be and we can afford it. I would give the guy $20 -25 if he hauled everything in. More if he made many trips or I had ordered a lot of heavy stuff.

For us $5 is not a big deal but it's the difference between a decent tip and a good tip for someone who probably needs that $5 more than you.

So, OP don't stiff the peapod guy. He's got bills to pay too and that five bucks is probably needed.

I really don't understand you folks who don't carry cash. I don't carry a lot of cash at all times, but I do go to the ATM probably once a month and get $200 and that's usually plenty for the month. Just do that.

Its always been there.

I don't see why we have to tip for everything in this country. I'm from here but have lived in Australia and Germany - where tipping is not expected - and is much lower than ours when given. If a server is good, they should just be paid a decent wage. The price should just be the price. As an engineer, I don't get tips from our customers if I perform well, I just get repeat customers. I think tipping is a stupid, annoying idea. We don't tip fast food workers (I don't), so why do we need to tip a delivery driver? Personally, I'd rather be a delivery driver than a fast food worker. If we are concerned about these people making enough money to survive, then we should be more interested in raising the minimum wage - not tipping for every stupid thing.

If there is a delivery charge, no tip.

I was reading some other posts and just want to say people are so rude how could you stiff the guy or give him five dollars he is bringing multiple boxes of your food to your door. Her has to watch everything he is doing so nothing gets damaged. What do you tip your pizza guy hate to know... come on people think think think those drivers are sideway always kind and polite, they live of tips they don't make much.... at least 8 to 20 dollars is good

Goes back to do you tip UPS FEDEX or USPS? No- they bring multitude of boxes and no tip..

Stop the insanity of tipping every service employee. He is paid around $15.00/hr.

I don't have enough counter space for him to put all the bags on the counter. It would have been nice if he would have showed me which of the bags had the eggs in it. But his job isn't really to provide this type of service, it's to take my groceries from his truck to my kitchen. What about the lowly paid workers who filled my order and lovingly put my Romaine lettuce heads in separate bags. Shouldn't he or she get a cut of this gratitude?

How is your solution -- tipping no one -- helpful to them?

It doesn't help them. My point is that I don't understand why the Peapod delivery guy who is just one person in the chain of people involved in getting me my peapod order the one who gets the tip. I understand why I tip the pizza delivery guy - he's using his own car plus the delivery is free. I tip people at the salon because they give me special, personalized service and I want them to continue giving me this service. I tip the cab driver so if he sees me hailing a cab again he might be more likely to pick me up. I tip the waitress because I know she or he survives and depends on tips. I don't see how any of this fits with the rationale of tipping the Peapod delivery guy. The rationale here seems to be that I should tip him out of pity.

You are stupid. Why tip the waitress? She doesn't cook...giant know you can't tip the other people who worked on your order since you don't see them, and who said the that goes on the paper doesn't get divided up.You can afford peapod, but the $5 it's just over the top.

A friend is a Fed Ex driver and makes over $60k a year, so much more than the Pea Pod guy.

What's the harm in erring on the side of generosity? Is two or three dollars - or five - really going to crush your budget?

+1 and it has been there for at least a year.

If it's there, it's not real obvious.

I don't really see why I need to give the guy a tip anyway. He is just taking my groceries from the truck to my kitchen. Isn't that his job? Didn't I already pay a fairly steep delivery charge for the privilege? Maybe if he would have put my eggs on the counter out of reach from my two-year old who ended up smashing them when they were left on the floor, I might see where this extra service is coming from that merits all this preparation and additional compensation. How do you leave a tip if the deliver is unattended? Maybe that's actually the answer. I think I would be willing to take the stuff in from my front door to my kitchen to save $5.

You sound like a piece of work.

I'm amazed people are not concerned about safety and allowing someone into their home. Especially SAHM moms...

Jesus OP.

The driver makes perhaps minimum wage. He is dependent on tips. The fact that you pay a steep delivery charge benefits him not at all. It goes to Giant.

Welcome to DC. Where the wealthy theoretically want to help the poor people but when it comes to actually doing it - not so much.
