Peapod Delivery Guy Wants a Tip

I don't have enough counter space for him to put all the bags on the counter. It would have been nice if he would have showed me which of the bags had the eggs in it. But his job isn't really to provide this type of service, it's to take my groceries from his truck to my kitchen. What about the lowly paid workers who filled my order and lovingly put my Romaine lettuce heads in separate bags. Shouldn't he or she get a cut of this gratitude?

How is your solution -- tipping no one -- helpful to them?

Dude, it's delivery. If you don't want to tip drive your but to the store or catch a bus or cab.

Then go pick up your own damn groceries. Problem solved.

It doesn't help them. My point is that I don't understand why the Peapod delivery guy who is just one person in the chain of people involved in getting me my peapod order the one who gets the tip. I understand why I tip the pizza delivery guy - he's using his own car plus the delivery is free. I tip people at the salon because they give me special, personalized service and I want them to continue giving me this service. I tip the cab driver so if he sees me hailing a cab again he might be more likely to pick me up. I tip the waitress because I know she or he survives and depends on tips. I don't see how any of this fits with the rationale of tipping the Peapod delivery guy. The rationale here seems to be that I should tip him out of pity.

My delivery guy is awesome and would definitely point out where the eggs are if I asked. He also bring the groceries inside and sets them wherever I need them. He does a good job. I appreciate him. I tip because I am grateful and happy with his service. I don't ask, "what is in it for me if I tip the Peapod delivery guy".

You believe pizza delivery is free? That you really need to tip people at the salon to get special personalized service -- that they are more deserving? That it's likely a cab driver will see you again after you give him a tip, and give you good service? Okay. You are nuts.

The rationale is that you should tip him because he is performing a service you value. If you do not value it enough to pay him $5, you have the obvious option of carrying your own eggs and putting them where ever your heart desires.

Oh whatever. It's not like the guy gets pennies, which a food server does.

Do you often get the same Peapod delivery guy? Because I've had two deliveries and they have been by two different guys. One didn't seem to expect a tip and they other asked for one.

The guy who asked for one said that Peapod discouraged tips but recently has started to allow tips. That doesn't seem to line up with the experiences people have had here who seemed to have been regularly tipping the Peapod deliver guy for a year or more. It doesn't really matter either way. Maybe he was making me feel better about not offering a tip.

If I got the same peapod guy each time, then tipping might make more sense to me. Call me nuts. Fine.

I'm paying a delivery fee. I didn't arrange for this person to deliver my groceries. I value it enough to pay the delivery fee. I'm not sure I value it enought to pay the delivery fee plus $5.

How does it help Peapod and specifically Peapod delivery drivers if I stop ordering groceries from them?

Do you not tip the pizza guy or Chinese food delivery person? Thisbis not like UPS or FedEX.

That was rude of him. No tip for him! I had a delivery guy tell me something along the lines that they don't get paid much, very much with attitude, implying I should tip him. I had planned on tipping him and did so even though he did this. He seemed a little embarrassed. I thought about calling Peapod and letting them know about him but didn't.

I disagree. Peapod delivery is much more like UPS or FedEx than pizza or Chinese food delivery. I do tip the pizza guy and Chinese food delivery people.

I think Peapod should take more responsibility for being upfront with customers about this tipping situation. I can't find any information about it on their site. Like I said, Peapod delivery is worth the delivery fee to me, but I don't think it is worth that plus $5. I might have to find an alternative if the reality is that Peapod delivery isn't $8 but $13-20 or more.

Harris Teeter Express Lane is $5.
