Obesity != black culture. Why are you being so obtuse? EVERY race has problems with obesity and as other pps have pointed out it's more of a class and education issue. Good for you and your family it's not an issue for you. You can stop acting as if it's an issue for every other black woman in america that doesn't have the good fortune to be related to you. |

Sorry OP anytime you have to say "I am quite black" as a justification there is something wrong. If you really were immersed in your claimed culure or really just the world around you wouldn't need to pose a question like this on a website that is frequented by predominantly white people. Really? What kind of answers did you envision receieving? Or did you want to commiserate with the culture you wish you were born into? Get a grip. Go volunteer somewhere predominantly black. I promise "your poeple" dont bite and maybe you will learn something. But if it makes you feel better you can leave your purse at home and bring your liscense and 5 bucks. For your reference, there is a link to the urban dictionary just in case you want to add some slang or try to make yourself sound more authentic. Black people just like everyone else come from all walks of life.

OP, if you are health conscious, then you should gain some weight. Studies have proven that people who are slightly overweight live longer than skinny people and fat people. Look it up. I'm very sorry to tell you that you are not as healthy as you think. Please gain some weight if you only care about health and not about what looks good. |
| I am a black woman who believes that we are disproportionately overweight because we have greater stress because we are more likely to be working and raising our kids on our own. You can buy a bag of dry beans that will feed four for several days and rice for less than three dollars at any grocery store. But what single mother has the time and energy to make cheap healthy meals? |
It takes time to eat. My grandmother raised 8 kids alone, and she was not obese because food was expensive. She also sewed all of their clothes, had no dishwasher, no TV, no refrigerator (until 1955), and no washing machine. The excuses are scary. It means that things will never change. |
Reference? |
Yes, but back then we didn't have ridiculously over processed convenience foods. It's a good example of what one can do, but it's also a little disingenuous because the choices that she faced were very different than that of the single mother of today. |
| Hahaha. Hoity toity OP. |
OK, then you are talking about choices. That is correct, it IS about choices. |
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/14/health/14obese.html Where are you receiving your data that 80% of Black women are obese. I have attached a NY Times article which indicates that the obesity among Black women are closer to 50%. Yes there are a lot of Big Mommas in my race, but I really take exception to what is described as obese. First, doctors compare body size of Black women to white women. A white woman's body size is what is supposed to be normal. Normal for who. That in my opinion is a no, no. I am 5 feet 8 3/4 in height. I weight 168 pounds. Yet, my doctor says that I am overweight. Not, when I weiged 155 pounds I looked like I was a waif and was always hungry. So, if I am obese so be it. Personally, I have no desire to look like an ironing board or kate Moss like. BTW-- other than what piece of paper states regarding my perceived obesity, I have perfect BP, cholesteral, no diabetes, cancer, etc. I do have a lack of vitamin A. Perhaps because I don't sit in the sun soaking up rays to turn brown. |
