Someone please explain the term WASP to me?

Virginia as a state is traditionally WASP.

Yes and what a lot (not all) of the people on this thread don't get is that this includes both the Middleburg $$ horsey set / George WashingtonThomas Jefferson / Richmond pearlclutchers-DAR

AND

some of the poorest residents of the U.S., who live in the hollows and coal towns in southwest Va. Grundy, Big Stone Gap. People with no teeth due to 100% lack of dental care, etc.

Exactly. People who don't understand WASP think it is some sort of elitish group and it is not.

Technically, yes, the term includes poor whites. However, we all know that the larger cultural connotation refers to wealthy whites.

No, it simply doesn't. Those are the confused people who do that.

Just like students from Nigeria studying at GW on a student visa are not African American. Sure, you can call them that, but you would be wrong.

You are wrong and confusing connotation with definition. The WASP definition includes both poor and wealthy, but the connotation refers to the wealthy and powerful.

The AfAm definition includes only Americans. People who use the term for African Africans are just wong.

Now you're trying to have it both ways. The definition of African American is only Americans, but the connotation is blacks who happen to be in America. What's sauce for the goose, and all that. It's wrong, but so is thinkign WASP means clones Thurston Howell, III and his wife, Lovey.

Yeah? Tell that to the Nigerian students you're referencing. Every one I've ever met has not considered themself an african american.

Most references of the WASPy set refer to the upper crust. Do you think polo is an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon? WASP.

I'm not sure how you can equate the bravery of early settlers with the word "nerdy." Many of them were not at all rich.

PP wasn't talking about our Founding Mothers. She's talking about their WASP descendants and the organization that quite a few of them belong to.
