"Protestant" usually Episcopalian not Presbyterian.

Presbyterian IS a protestant denomination. If you are a Christian you are either Catholic, Prostestant or Orthodox and all the various demoninations fall into one of the three buckets.

This. Episcopalian is one of many protestant denominations - lutherans, methodists, baptists, presbyterians, etc. Brush up if your going to run around correcting people.

I always thought it meant uppercrust, white, socially monolythic, mainstream protestant, NOT bible thumping evangelicals. The kind of people you think of when you hear the word society. East coast also comes to mind, as does vacations in the Hamptons. Those pictures of the preppy boys captures it.

That is not saying much, half the rednecks in this country technically qualify as WASPS.

Very true! I can think of a few I personally know (SIL's exhusbands for example). While they technically qualify as WASPs, they are not the people I would think of when I hear this term.

This is what I also think of when I hear WASP. Like the whitest of the white in America.

These people were essentially the power elite in our country up until about 40 years ago... before the civil rights movement, and the perversion of the Republican party by anti-intellectual evangelicals (not that it wasn't perverted before... look at Nixon!). Like a PP said, our first President Bush is a good example.

What about for women? Like the mom on Dharma and Greg? sorry I know it's a lame example, but this is the only person who comes to mind.
