Although the scores dropped from last year, Stoddert made AYP overall. Eight points off in math is not that all significant. The 12 points in reading is a bit troubling. However, Stoddert is a transient school with ambassador's kids and military. The addition and subtraction of kids could have turned the tide a bit. In any event, Stoddert was not on the list of schools with suspicious erasure marks. That said respectable scores for 2011.

Sorry, that is simply not accurate. Stoddert did NOT make AYP this year in either Reading or math and it made AYP least year in both subjects. Check the OSSE site to see for yourself.

As you must know, in DCPS the only allowable reason for rising or falling scores are the adults. It's never the kids, except by proxy. The Principals lean on the teachers and the teachers teach better which causes the kids to learn more no matter who they are. When Stoddert's scores went up the teachers and principal got the credit -- so according to DCPS, they should now get the blame. I don't believe thiis, but I haven't heard anything different from DCPS -- it was their reason for firing Stoddert's principal and bringing in a rock star.

Call her what you will to suit your overall beliefs about the direction of DCPS, but I defy you to find one Stoddert parent who thinks that any of the former principals could hold a candle to the current one. It's a very happy parent community there.

I wonder if scores might have been worse (or maybe worse for some kids) due to where spring break fell. Usually the DC CAS is after spring break when kids have had time to relax a bit. This year they were before. One of my kids scores fell dramatically, and he is sensitive to stress. Grades were good and he was learning.

Maybe -- but tough - data is data, This is the DCPS point of view and you can bet they manipulated the data as best they could before releasing it.

To them, it means your kid didn't learn the way he should have -- because his teacher didn't teach well enough to overcome his sensitivity to stress or whatever else was impeding his learning. Good teachers overcome this type of thing and much, much more. Your pampered Stoddert kid is nothing compared to kids with chaotic family situations and bullets flying at night.

No excuses - go hard or go home.

happy even though the scores are declining? DCPS doesn't care about parental happiness - they care about your kids' scores only. If they had anyone to replace your principal with she'd be gone, just like last stoddert principal, and principal Pope of Hardy.

Well, in his case the scores went down after he left - but never mind about that, his sin was to refuse to participate in the failed capital gains program. Turns out he was right, just as all the social scientists predicted based on decades of respected research, but never mind - the nerve of him to deny the students of DC something that its noble leaders ordained.

Did the capital gains program fail? I was waiting for an update on that. It sounded like a horrifying concept to me, but they brought it out with so much fanfare. Won't there be a follow-up with as much fanfare? Maybe I'll write Kaya and ask for an update that I can post here.

I don't get the issue of parental happiness. I want my child prepared to go to college and compete in an international economy. I understand if you only teach the test this will not happen, but that is not neccessary to pass this test.

No snark - just facts - she may be a wonderful principal, but she was really called a rock star and the scores really did go down and in this system, principals and teachers are rated by scores, not how dedicated, experienced and wonderful they are.

Talk about dismissing someone's entire career - what was it when Rhee summarily dismissed competent principals in favor of "rock stars" and when she when around the country saying that DC teachers were "crappy"
