Are you trying to tell me because you have one mystery neighborhood near you with lots of rich black people in MoCo, it's socio-economics and not race? Really, all of the research out there about race and equity are just lies because you have dismantled it with your one neighborhood. |
The sad truth is that until fairly recently the homes of many of the "nicer" neighborhoods across MoCo included bans on non-whites and jews. When we went to closing and and saw the restirctions in our deed at closing we balked; our realtor, nice southern lady that she was, offered that we could go door to door and ask our neighbors to petiton a change. And she warned that we might like what we heard. Granted that was over 10 years ago and I believe the rules have been removed from the bookds.
But things change slowly. Integration happens in the schools more quickly than at home, and perhaps also for the disconnect in perceptions among people who tend not to know one another. Perhaps these issues are not unique to the DC area. |
You have yet to identify your neighborhood - I call your bluff. Either that, or you have a flawed definition of McMansion. |
Those rules changed way over ten years ago. You are completely misrepresenting or else you have dementia and don't know what year it is. |
There were no restrictions on your deed ten years ago. Montgomery County rewrote the laws to prohibit that kind of thing in 1968. Why are you making this story up? |
You missed the naked pig man at the Garrett Park festival a few years ago and I really think you just miss the point in general. |
I did not say Takoma Park diversity is so limited - I said you guys shove it down everybody's throats like you guys have transended racism or something because you haven't. Also, it is interesting how most people just ignored the College Gardens suggestion - in Rockville, which is diverse, and near their job and a great place to live - basically because the SS/TP people needed another opportunity to take the Bethesda people down and prop themselves up. |
The funny thing about TP is that it is actually pretty segregated these days. You have the rich, white parts of TP and the less affluent black and hispanic parts. Some areas in between are pretty mixed but there is a definite divide. The schools are diverse but the neighborhoods are not really. I grew up there (with hippy parents) and spent much of my adult life there. I had all white neighbors on my street and all of the nearby streets except for a few adopted kids with white parents. The crime eventually drove me away. But the place has changed so much and I have to agree that the self-righteous attitude there is a bit much. |
Can you please show me where on this thread anyone from Takoma "shoved it down your throat" or claimed to have "transcended racism"? I see a few posts where different people pointed out that SS/TP has more diverse demographics than Bethesda, and backed it up with numbers. But many of those posts seemed to go out of their way to say what a nice place Bethesda is. Why do you seem so defensive and critical of Takoma Park? Did I miss some subtle attack on Bethesda? There certainly are a small but vocal number of wacky, self-righteous people in the Takoma community. I'm sure each of them would just think of themselves as "passionate" about their particular cause, whether it's creating an energy-neutral home, or cancer research, or labor rights, or healthcare for foreign workers, or whatever. But I don't see anyone like that on this thread. I'm not here to push Takoma Park -- it's not for everyone. I'm just surprised and confused by the vehemence of your unsolicited criticism of my neighborhood. |
Here are some examples of statements made...
To the extent there is diversity, it's because of the diplomats' kids. We did not move to Bethesda for that very reason. They think that because it is more black kids than they expected, and it makes them feel open-minded. IMF and World Bank types want nothing to do with the countries bizarre stuff going down in PTAs around Kentlands Western MoCo are really emphasizing "freedom from poor people and other ethnic groups." lilly white schools in Bethesda "nicer" neighborhoods across MoCo included bans on non-whites and jews 1. IMF and WB are racist and don't count as minorities and diplomats kids don't count as diversity. 2. Kentland has some bizarre racism even in the PTA 3. West MoCo is freeing themselves from poor people. 4. Really - "lilly white" do you know how racist that statement is. These statement were made by your TP/SS neighbors. I would not describe them as welcoming. There are a min of 5 post suggesting SS/TP with about 10 posts dedicated to statistics. My throat is full already. Hey if you work in Rockville - go to school in Rockville - like many posts suggest - or go north - it is cheaper and diverse. After SS/TP/Bethesda/Potomac were settled - MoCo housing and urban development required moderately priced houses in every community built. They are in my community and now the people that moved in are home owners. Their kids play with my kids - they are of all races including white and they go to our school. The commute to TP is insane. Live in SS or TP if you have to work in DC but not if you work in Rockville. You live in TP - name 1 other place - just 1 that you would recommend this family to go. See you can't because you think TP is the end all be all. It just is not. It's a great place but it is not the only place. |
PP, did it occur to you that SS/TP people recommend that area because that is where they live, and what they are familiar with? If there are Rockville folks on this thread whoa are familiar with and recommend their neighborhoods, they should say something. I don't live in or know much about Rockville, why would I talk in depth about it? Although, come to think about it, people on DCUM go on ad nauseum about things they know little about all the time . . . |
Thank you for making my point. You only know SS/TP - you really do not have any working knowledge about any other part of MoCo. So great recommend SS/TP just stay away from the pot shots on the rest of the county. |
Well I personally am not taking potshots at the rest of the county. You may have me confused with another poster. I just think this thread has a lot of non relevant hissy fits from people taking tHings too personally. |
What is your take on the statistics posted about Carderock, Somerset and Burning Tree Elementary Schools? Are you suggesting that they are in fact diverse? |
