Who cares if your kid is overweight!

What health food have you been eating if it tastes like dog turds? I would define McDonalds as tasting like dog turds.

Like another PP I found that I really like healthy food, and I really like to exercise. I like my junk food too, it's all about balance and moderation. I eat ice cream, I eat chocolate, I eat chips. But I also eat homemade healthy foods and exercise.

You're 13. You may change your mind about food in a few years once you are able to cook and discover foods for yourself (and when you see what a completely healthy diet does to your health).

But it is NOT good parenting to raise fat children. Just like it's not good parenting to think that tanning PREVENTS skin cancer (like a recent post on another thread). Our job as parents is to be knowledgable about these issues and to raise healthy children. Just talk to any pediatrician about this.

How does it make you feel when your child can't keep up with his/her peers? Can't participate in sports? Can't fit into clothing? Gets teased? Is ignored?

It's time to take responsibility. It's not the child's fault they're fat; it's the parent's fault.

Oh, and you can participate in sports if you are overweight. I was overweight in middle school/ high school and played basketball. Being thin does not mean you are in good shape.

Sure.

With extremely rare exceptions, people are not overweight unless they are eating too much of the wrong foods. We can play around with excuses, but we all know that kids don't get fat unless they are eating (read: being fed) incorrectly. Add that to a sedentary lifestyle, and you have the recipe for a fat kid.

It's never the child's fault. As a parent, you own it 100%. And you owe it to your child to fix it.

Hey there, another DCUM Know-it-All talking out of her ass,

Here's a revelation for you, since I can tell you either have very young tots or babies, or no kids at all: when your children are older they become much more autonomous and they control their food intake themselves to a great extent. You can buy nothing but a bean sprout macrobiotic diet for your house but your 10 year old will still eat what he wants at school, after school, at soccer practice when the team moms bring %#$ crap packaged shit for "snack," .... at the movies with their friends, using their own money they earned ... at the pool snack bar, when you're not with them ...so, no. You can model all you want as your 'thin parent' self, but at some point, your older kids make their own choices and it's not always baked tofu with fat-free vinagarette and a side of mesclun.

Then they want to quit soccer and instead spend that time on photography and yearbook. Then what?

At some point, oh smug Mom of a 20 month old, it's out of your hands.

This is a bunch of bull and you know it. You are just coming up with excuses - you still have a lot of control over what your 10 yo eats - how about packing lunch or sendiung your own snacks Also I think that it is very telling that your idea of "healthy" food is "sprout and baked tofu" How about grilled chichen breat or the occasionall turkey burger.

Let's meet for a one-on-one game. I am confident that I could drive you into the ground on the basketball court, even if I'm not as skinny as you think I need to be.

The next time you are out at the store - look for the most overweight, obese person you can find. You really will turn into that person if you don't chagne your habits now.

Sure, as an adult you can change, but it is 100 times harder and less succesful.

signed,
a former 13 yr old fatty who refused to believe this until I was a 35 yr old fatty and trying to lose even 20 lbs became extemely difficult.

Everyone here seems tragically retarded.

While you all argue about dieting and whether fat children are acceptable in today's society I have not seen one poster who talks about parents forcing their children outside for some fresh air.
Sure, dieting is helpful but kids aren't going to lose much weight while they sit there on their butts playing video games all day every day.

And as a parent you are 100% responsible, I don't give a damn what anyone here says about children going out with their own money and buying junk food. Unless they are eating tons of the the crap behind your back they aren't going to become obese from sneaking in some junk here and there. Own up to your responsibilities and stop making excuses.

I used to sit there and eat almost an entire package of cookies when I was younger but it didn't matter because I was always outside running around for hours. I burned off all the crap I put into my body. Obesity is only now becoming an issue because you're not forcing your children to be more active. Bad parenting, your fault not theirs.

Wow - regardless of one's feelings about childhood obesity, you are tragically ass-backwards. Who uses that word anymore? Seriously.
