"In my country"..... Oh please, shut up!

Ick!

Only if you really believe that God cares how you wipe your butt, is watching every time you do it, and if you do it the wrong way he will send you to H@ll. As opposed to, I don't know, criteria like treating other people well, trying to avoid hate and prejudice, or giving to charity....

It's not God you dumb ass. It's about hygiene!

Invest in a bar of soap, since from your post it looks like you've never come across soap. Teach your kids to use it too. It's really an excellent invention.

13:06 here to make a public apology. Yes, I stooped to her level, which was pretty low. I couldn't stop myself. I will try not to descend this far in the future.

Read more than Half the responses here. It's mostly Americans who hate other Americans. It's rather sad, actually.

I'm not really bothered by foreign nationals criticizing the U.S., for the most part. I would expect people to have a lot of affection and loyalty to their home countries, that's human. Americans can learn a lot from thoughtful comments from others.

What really bothers me are Americans who accuse their fellow citizens of "hating America" when they voice any criticism of it, especially when the accusation is coupled with the distinction between themselves--"real Americans"-- and the rest of us who live in cities or on the coasts, appreciate foreign travel, and eat arugula. I can't think of anything less patriotic than dissing your fellow Americans this way.

Stereoptype much?

Indeed. I was pointing out the ridiculous stereotype all those "real Americans" hold of their fellow citizens.

And I was pointing out the fact that you stereotyped an entire population (non-urban/non-coastal), etc. You basically invalidated your argument by throwing out generalizations about people in small town America.

And yes, it's part of culture shock, but you can also show good manners. I have vented to family members, but never to the people of the country I was living in. That's just rude.

I totally agree.

I lived abroad (Asia) for a number of years and travel frequently for work. I would never complain about a country in the presence of nationals precisely b/c it is rude. If I wanted to vent I would with other ex-pats. I share thoughts or experiences with local friends but never in a complaining way like "i can't stand this about your country". I work with lots of foreign nationals now and it always rubs me the wrong way when people piss & moan about the US. It's not like they are forced to stay here......

Finally, I find a lot of criticism can be constructive and well-received if it's simply phrased well and without bad intentions.

I'm noticing that lots of us who have lived abroad seem to apply a single behavioral standard to ourselves when abroad, and to foreigners living in the US. I think that's only fair, and there shouldn't be two sets of standards, one for americans abroad, and different standards for foreigners in the U.S. Pissing and moaning, complaining about toilet habits, and generally being unconstructive, are irritating and unhelpful whatever the nationality of the person doing the moaning and pissing.

14:31 again. I should add that I've consciously refrained from commenting on this or that about other peoples' countries, when I've lived abroad.

Maybe that's why so many of us who HAVE lived abroad have lower tolerance for certain offensive DCUM posters.

Because we've been there, done that, and we've managed to conduct ourselves better than the offending DCUM posters.

Why is it smug to believe your country is great? I'm not a chest-thumping "proud to be an american" song loving types, but I love my country. It has flaws. Every country does, even your "higher quality of life" European country. But, I do think you should thank your lucky stars to live here. Yes.

I get seriously pissed off when people come to it and get to take part of the many great things it has to offer. The freedoms we have here. And, then come on here and piss and moan about it and the "smug" americans. Plus, it is MY HOME. Yes, I get pissed about people trashing my home.

Nothing smug about believing your country is great. Never said that. I also think the US is pretty great and it is my home now too. But my home country is great too, and your automatic assumption that I have come here for a better life and I should now be eternally grateful makes me think of you as smug, and ignorant too.

You can call me whatever you want. I don't much care. And, yes, I do think you should be gratefull. I'll say it again b/c that seems to bug you so much.

I'm not the one bad-mouthing my adopted country for no apparent reason other than you can (I would not do such a thing and many others would not, either). Criticism is one thing. Sniping for no reason is quite another. But, as you are rude enough to do so about the country you profess to call home-for no constructive reason whatsoever- that makes you rude. So, I shouldn't be surprised to know that you are also a bitch.

How old are you, 12? And learn how to use elipses and quotes. And how to manage your anger, that goes without saying.... (Note the correct use of elipses, three for the "et cetera" part and one for the period at the end of the sentence.)

Thank you! I've noticed how the trashiest people online (on forums, facebook, and the like) apparently think that elipses can be any length and are appropriate for all punctuation needs. It's a pretty clear indicator someone has about an 8th-grade education level (whether they are 13 years old or not!).

I am American, and except for the teeth brushing after lunch comment, I agree with what the "foreigners," and others have posted. Should I "go home" as well? OP, get over yourself. yes, I just said that.

So you agree with the poster who says the USA's food made her fat? In that case, you don't need to go home, but you do need to stop being lazy and go to the gym.

A country cannot make you fat when there are healthy options for those who seek them. I am not speaking of those who live in poor neighborhoods with little/no access to fresh foods- I'm assuming most posters on DCUM are lucky enough not to have that problem.

A common perception of overweight people in China was that they had lived in the US. This was years ago before we imported our fast food there and now they have their own home grown fatties.

My guess is that this is the same potty-mouthed poster from the toilet comment. Can there be two such awful people?

I wipe my ass with my RIGHT hand, and then I use soap and water to wash BOTH of my hands. Do you have access to soap and running water in "your country"?

In America, we also have toilet paper.

Um, I'm with you on the soap use. Just saying.
