Least conservative/least MAGA of the top-ranked schools in MCPS?

I’ve taught in several schools in the county since 2001. The WJ cluster is the only one where I encountered students and staff that were vocally politically right wing. One my coworkers was an avowed tea partier and later celebrated Trump’s first election.

She was upset that she was an hour late to school because of it.

Is this still true? My kid was slated to go to WJ, but now is unfortunately not... too bad, as I'd like to meet up likeminded parents in this crappy county.

NP. I live in one of these school zones and I have to agree. I was really surprised when I found out that quite a few of my neighbors are MAGA and/or anti-LGBTQ. Although the schools in my area have very diverse populations, a lot of the kids come from immigrant families who tend to be more socially conservative.

I am not MAGA but I am anti LGBT propaganda in schools. I cannot believe what nonsense they have in libraries in elementary schools. I had to explain to my 8 year old what a *gayradar* is. MCPS spends money on such trashy books and yet half of the kids are not proficient in math. Priorities!

I'm all for general LGBT and am live and let live, but not this craziness in elementary schools. Zero reasons I need to have these talks with my 8 and under kids. Interestingly enough, MoCO is full of secret center/R of center folks who have to hide who they are so as not to get their cars keyed - inclusion in all its glory

Tell me about it. Our school had a book where a kid goes to his uncle's wedding, and it's to another man. How am I supposed to explain that nonsense?!? Just say some men fall in love with women and some men fall in love with men?!? My 6 year old does not need to know that gay people exist. Who knows where it could lead? What else will he learn exists in the world?

You should let you 6 year old watch And Just Like That. All the topics covered.

Sure, that might help clarify some lifestyle questions, but how would explain some of those outfits?!? I'm not ready to discuss mixing patterns with my kid, and the school system should not force me to do so.

If you are looking at school quality, the best public schools are where the rich people are (with the exception of middle and high school selective magnets, which were deliberately placed in less wealthy neighborhoods, but I believe changes are afoot because MCPS is restructuring its magnet programs). Walt Whitman is considered the best high school, with all the schools that start with "W" in their name (called the W schools). BCC is an honorary member of that group, even though test scores are ever so slightly lower, because it's in downtown Bethesda and has the full IB program.

If you want diversity in your schools in terms of skin color and economic disparity, that's NOT where the rich people are. The W schools are very white, particularly Walt Whitman, and some like Winston Churchill have a strong contingent of east Asians. There is international diversity in all the neighborhoods close to DC, but in Bethesda it tends to be World Bank, diplomat, scientific research families, and in other areas, immigrants from a less stratospheric walk of life.

The most important criteria to think about, honestly, are commute to your work and price of real estate/rentals.

Thank you, this is very helpful and I think you’re pushing us to ask exactly the right questions. I do think we would like a balance of diversity with a quality education, so perhaps some of these “W” schools would have to be looked at more closely. I had assumed that Churchill and Whitman might be more red-leaning because of the areas they draw from, but it sounds like it may be less of an issue of such contingents creating a conservative learning environment at the school and more so a question of the extent to which they have diversity. Certainly a more diverse school would be preferred for our family background.

We're at Churchill. No MAGA vibes but there are families here and there. Coming from a 99.9% progressive school before, it's a little different but in the sense that every once in a while my kid notices that someone's family has different views. I walk for exercise and drive around a lot and have seen two Trump yard signs in 4 years.

WJ is a wonderful school! Enjoyed the mix of everyone before DS graduated.

Churchill Cluster here and if anyone is MAGA they aren't talking about it. I think most people who moved here for the current administration chose VA because it's a more red state generally, even if NoVA isn't.

MoCo is overall very politically liberal. Fun fact: every state Delegate and state Senator in MoCo is a Democrat. Our Federal Congressional delegation has one Republican, all the rest are Democrats. Many areas are so left-leaning that the primary election is the main competitive race, since in the general election, a Republican stands little chance of winning. As far as I can tell, MAGA is not dominant publicly anywhere in MoCo. I'm sure there are some MAGA supporters here and there, but they are so in the minority that they keep it quiet in most cases.

We've been in that cluster for 15 years. IME, the MAGA are a very small minority, but there's usually a couple. At least one or two taught at the Uniformed Services Academy that is in Bethesda, but most of the military I've met (many of whom are at Walter Reed, so medical professionals) are not MAGA.
