Least conservative/least MAGA of the top-ranked schools in MCPS?

Takoma Park is known to be very progressive, crunchy type liberal. Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac are the wealthiest areas of MoCo. This means that some families will be rich and conservative (some might send their children to private school, but some will end up in the local publics).

I live in Bethesda, and my neighbors are mostly very anti-MAGA, but there are some conservatives. And you will always find a MAGA kook at some point. My friend near Walter Johnson has such a neighbor, in a deep sea of blue - bad luck.

If you are looking at school quality, the best public schools are where the rich people are (with the exception of middle and high school selective magnets, which were deliberately placed in less wealthy neighborhoods, but I believe changes are afoot because MCPS is restructuring its magnet programs). Walt Whitman is considered the best high school, with all the schools that start with "W" in their name (called the W schools). BCC is an honorary member of that group, even though test scores are ever so slightly lower, because it's in downtown Bethesda and has the full IB program.

If you want diversity in your schools in terms of skin color and economic disparity, that's NOT where the rich people are. The W schools are very white, particularly Walt Whitman, and some like Winston Churchill have a strong contingent of east Asians. There is international diversity in all the neighborhoods close to DC, but in Bethesda it tends to be World Bank, diplomat, scientific research families, and in other areas, immigrants from a less stratospheric walk of life.

The most important criteria to think about, honestly, are commute to your work and price of real estate/rentals.

In what way are "W" schools better than Blair, Wheaton, Northwood or Paint Branch?

What? Where do you get this from?

All these schools are so diverse and no MAGA's this side. Have you ever been Upcounty?

Yep. There is no Moco precinct that Trump won. And he lost most by a landslide.

NP. I live in one of these school zones and I have to agree. I was really surprised when I found out that quite a few of my neighbors are MAGA and/or anti-LGBTQ. Although the schools in my area have very diverse populations, a lot of the kids come from immigrant families who tend to be more socially conservative.

County elections are regularly like 75% Dem, 25% Rep. 25% is not enough to really ever win any elections but they’re there. You will run into them from time to time. Not all of those Rs are MAGA Rs. I don’t know why Trump admin MAGA people would chose to live in MoCo but apparently some of them do too. But school-wise, they are solidly a minority of all public school families and rarely blast their beliefs all over the place because of that.

I am not MAGA but I am anti LGBT propaganda in schools. I cannot believe what nonsense they have in libraries in elementary schools. I had to explain to my 8 year old what a *gayradar* is. MCPS spends money on such trashy books and yet half of the kids are not proficient in math. Priorities!

I'm all for general LGBT and am live and let live, but not this craziness in elementary schools. Zero reasons I need to have these talks with my 8 and under kids. Interestingly enough, MoCO is full of secret center/R of center folks who have to hide who they are so as not to get their cars keyed - inclusion in all its glory

this is so true, students made fun of my child (high school age) for supporting andrew cuomo! they are all Mamdani supporters at wootton high school

I honestly tell my kids to keep their mouths shut on these kinds of things... my kid recently complained to me (completely unprompted) that her school bus was stuck in traffic due to the ICE protests/walk-outs... she mentioned the kids blocking the street, cursing, and just generally acting unruly. She was upset that she was an hour late to school because of it.

Tell me about it. Our school had a book where a kid goes to his uncle's wedding, and it's to another man. How am I supposed to explain that nonsense?!? Just say some men fall in love with women and some men fall in love with men?!? My 6 year old does not need to know that gay people exist. Who knows where it could lead? What else will he learn exists in the world?

Montgomery County is left-leaning to the point of limping. If that's not what you're into then don't move there. I have only known one MAGA.

When we lived in an expensive upscale Bethesda neighborhood, there were two openly gay families -- one had two fathers and the other two mothers. So your kids are going to learn about gay lives one way or another. This is not Maybery RFD anymore. Your 6 year old probably already knows gay people exist and probably knows actual gay people.

Sorry, i was being sarcastic and mocking the poster I quoted. Thought that was obvious, but I agree with you! My point was that it was incredibly easy to explain that "woke craziness" to my kids. It took 20 seconds and they had no difficulty comprehending and accepting it.

Sure, that might help clarify some lifestyle questions, but how would explain some of those outfits?!? I'm not ready to discuss mixing patterns with my kid, and the school system should not force me to do so.
