There goes our spring break in Dubai

I would only go to Dubai to see the polo fields.

And I bet you're also someone who usually frowns on extremism, dictatorships, and would never vote for Trump. You pay lip service to civil rights and women's rights, but all that goes out of the window for the - checks notes - theme parks, resorts, beaches, safari, indoor skiiing, food and nightlife.

DP. Please post your grievances with Dubai. Be specific. Then we can compare and contrast with all of the other choices you make in your life, as well as - checks notes- your own country.

This is so unfounded it is ridiculous. Only liberals who support unfettered immigration are exploitative. (Even though the immigrants are largely free to make their own choices; and the people trafficking are also immigrants who you love to protect.)

Sure, and conservatives like to throw black men in prison and use them as ACTUAL slave labor to this day. But they’re US citizens and not immigrants, so it’s all good, right?

100% this. SO MANY studies in criminology and criminal justice and in sociology and in economics and more fields to back this up. Anyone can educate themselves on this topics, but “conservatives” won’t because at the end of the day, they like Black and brown people in jail and cleaning up highways.

While I’m certainly not a fan of over-criminalization (I mean, part of my day job is criminal justice reform), I am chuckling at any attempt to equate incarcerating people who did indeed commit a crime and were adjudicated by the American criminal justice system with the poor immigrants who are imported to work in Dubai, essentially enslaved, and sometimes die on the job due to impossibly inhumane work conditions. Ditto for the fact a woman can be thrown in jail (and worse) for doing some random thing deemed against their religion—and tourists can be locked up for drinking.

The whataboutism comparing human rights records with the USA in 2026 is nonsensical.

Sorry Whataboutism isn’t going to save your doomed vacation

In other words, you have no clue, and you’re outraged because someone of Facebook or YouTube or TikTok told you to be. Got it.

Deflection and Whataboutism is all you got. Enjoy the desert(?!) indoor(wtf) snow hill

And still no answers. Do some research today, then come back and pretend that you had an informed opinion all along. We’ll wait.

Now we’ve turned to “do your own research”. You’re like a who’s who of deflection and logical fallacies

This must be a very difficult time for you. Thoughts and prayers.

Everyone I know in Dubai is perfectly fine. The metro is still operating. By the end of March, everything will be back to normal.

You’re chuckling because you don’t give a $hit about injustice in your own backyard. In fact, you make a living off it.

But sure, keep clutching your pearls about the alleged human rights abuses thousands of miles away that you’re not directly participating in and/or profiting from. That’s much easier and it costs you nothing, which at the end of the day is all that matters to you.

I don't have any sympathy for non-diplomatic families, non-relatives, who go to Dubai or anywhere else in that region. These are autocratic countries, built on current, not former, slave immigrant labor, with a piss-poor record for treating women of their own nations like secondary citizens.

Slave immigrant labor? Who do you think washes your dishes, slaughters the chickens you eat, picks your avocados, and rakes your leaves? Get a grip lady. What a hypocrite!

The imported working class in Dubai is nothing like the immigrants in the US. The suffering by workers in Dubai is horrific. And your tourism supports that.

I’m always baffled by the Dcumlandia Faux-activists who pontificate about DEI and equality in the USA but brag about their vacations to places like Dubai where human rights simply aren’t “a thing.”

The point is, neither place is great. Human rights aren’t really a thing in the USA either. We treat immigrants despicably. So there’s really no difference whether you go to Vegas or Dubai honestly.

You can't seriously think immigrants in the US are treated as poorly as those in Dubai.

Actually, in some ways, they are treated better in Dubai. They are given visas and have legal work authorization, and are not forced to work under the table illegally, always subject to constant fear and deportation. They are treated more humanely in the Gulf, even if expected to work long hours.

^^granted, I wouldn’t want to work in construction or manual labor in Dubai (not that those occupations are great for illegal immigrants in the US either), but working in a shop or restaurant wouldn’t be so bad, and would come with more rights than an illegal immigrant has in the US.

Illegal migrants have way more rights in the US than legal migrants in the UAE. Whether you are a low paid Indian construction worker or midwage Filipino store clerk or maid, or a highly paid Western or Arab expat, you have no rights. None at all. Your visa can be terminated at any moment and you ordered to leave the country the same day. All expats, the 90%+ of the UAE population, are disposable and temporary, there is no such thing as a permanent visa. There is no appeal, there is no multiple shopping around via multiple appeals for sympathetic judges aka Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The UAE's rule is simple, follow the law, do not challenge it, accept the superiority of the Emiratis, and you will be left alone (as long as you have a legal working visa). And guess what, it works. It is far less hypocritical than the American system (like the Kilmar situation, a judge upholding the deportation order but adding a clause it can't be to his home country. Which made a sheer mockery of the ruling and laws).

Like most people posting on this thread, you know nothing about the UAE and are only twisting the realities to fit your personal political narrative.

Another dumb@$$ who hasn’t been paying attention to what’s been happening in our country.
