$50k/year/kid for high school? I don't think that "many" there can do that comfortably. |
There are some extremely wealthy enclaves in the Farmland/Luxmanor area (esp. Luxmanor). Many in the general county most certainly could not afford that price. |
Not as extremely wealthy as the enclave that Taylor lives in. |
Correct. Those kids go to school at places like Sidwell and GDS (a whole different ballgame) |
| I did not watch the hearing, but recently heard from a neighbor that there is growing advocacy to push for option B. Is there truth to this and did it come up in the public meeting? That option would be terrible for our neighborhood- we are walking sitance to Sligo but kids would be sent to SSIMS- I don't know why that was thrown out there as a potential option to begin with. So overall I was ok with Taylor's recommendation as it relates to our neighborhood. It's just hard to keep up with the changes and to anticipate what MCPS will throw out there next. The options for our neighborhood changed pretty drastically from the first to second round and caught a lot of people off guard. |
We all knew the White Flint Mall site would be redeveloped since 2014ish....it's now a motorcycle camp and wild forest. I think the development concern is over stated tbh |
There is some push for original Option B with regard to the now Current WJ cluster (sounds mainly like the Farmland/Luxmanor crew at the BOE mtg), not necessarily rest of map (but clearly would send WW back to Wheaton High). |
Not relevant. See Montoya quote above if you want to recall why this will be a losing point to keep harping on. Goal is getting their votes and support. |
Could it alleviate the "over-crowding" (air quotes) at new Woodward (which is at 90% utilization rate) and drive it back to 80% like they want? They should factor that into the data. My guess is they will deal with public. |
|
Some have opted into private already to avoid the messy transition. Can you blame them?
I heard the one mom testify about whether she should let her son take a language other than the top two. I would not. It is doubtful they will offer that other language, at least in the beginning, at Woodward. They’ll say he can switch languages. No guarantees he would get into WJ for their humanities program (every Woodward will apply). |
| The job of the BOE is to listen to the public comments, not chastise. I wonder if they have a policy about that? |
If he’s choosing the language this year then he’s in 8th grade now and the 8th graders aren’t eligible for the new program model - they are on the old system - so no applying to humanities program at WJ. It’s very complicated doing all this at once and different grades facing different changes/disruptions. It’s not super fun to be caught in the transition years for anyone. |
I'm another silver spring parent who strongly prefers modified option B to option B. I don't know anything about the Woodward dispute but I hope the baby doesn't get thrown out with the bathwater on the silver spring side. |
| The most selective colleges will want four years of the same language, mcps only requires 2. |
Yes, the push for original option B is focused on the option B region 3 boundaries and has ignored the differences between original option B and the Superintendent’s rec for Region 1. Everyone who bothers to comment on here about how a change would affect them should take 5 min to email the BOE. It is not hard to do and more effective in making sure the Board considers various points of view than posting here. |
