However, as far as I can tell, some came in through a rural route (or the nearest Thruway exit) and have judged the area from a limited perspective.

Six miles is far though when you don’t have a car.

Hamilton operates a Jitney service, which runs hourly to suburban areas and weekly into the city of Utica:

Utica is super depressed and the fact that they call it the jitney (as in reference to the Hamptons jitney) could be an issue for some.

False. Like most central NY cities, it has experienced a brain drain and net outward migration to southern states, but super depressed it is not. It's just not for you.

Some appear to be commenting on Utica without ever having visited its prominent features, such as a museum known for its Thomas Cole collection. People will vary with respect to art appreciation, however.

Hamilton isn’t in Utica.

Hamilton is similar to other top NESCAC schools and likely places similarly which is very well. Bucknell is an excellent school but it is not a peer of Hamilton.

Yet if you talked to them you’d find that the students are largely indistinguishable.

Sure. Keep telling yourself that.

The sad part is that you somehow believe that they are different when they most definitely are not. Hamilton in the top half of the NESCAC academically and for the top 5 the academic profiles are virtually identical except for the tails. Many of the students in these schools were shooting for the Ivies but didn't win the lottery, they are completely indistinguishable for the typical student at any Ivy league school which also makes them no different than a typical Stanford student.

Philosophically I want to believe this but I know a couple recent Hamilton grads and this is not the case for them. Have you met kids at Stanford recently? They're insanely accomplished.

I am Bay Area and I know lots of Stanford kids. My neighbor goes there, a close friends daughter went there, and our school sends several every year. All smart talented kids but nothing exceptional about any of them. One kid had a very neat EC because he worked in the kitchen of a Michelin 3 star for years but that’s it. Another is legacy but the family isn’t wealthy.

Cooking in a Michelin 3 star restaurant for years in high school isn’t exceptional?

I didn't say cooked, I said worked. That's a pretty big difference and cooking ay such a restaurant isn't something that one does part time especially when in high school. It made for a great story.

If you don't think working in a Michelin 3 star restaurant is anything exceptional, you'd be incredibly disappointed with Hamilton kids.

Not really, I know a second kid who also worked there as well. Didn't end up at Stanford.

Who in their right mind would want to spend 4 years at Hamilton or Colgate at $95k a year.

The last time Forbes considered the above question, both of these schools appeared in this list:

Clearly not you. Find a better fit for yourself or your student. Why this strange hate on Hamilton and Colgate thread this week? Hamilton is a high quality LAC in a pretty upstate NY location about 90 minutes west of Albany. Close to Utica but not in Utica. New Hartford is the closest commercial center with Target and Walmart and Panera, etc. Colgate is more isolated but also an excellent college in the vicinity. But if a northern LAC is not a good fit, look elsewhere instead of trashing excellent institutions.

No one said Hamilton is in Hamilton.

It's also not in Utica.

Agree with others can’t imagine sending a kid to such a remote location with horrible long winters.

Those of you who enjoy film may be interested in viewing a version of Hamilton (as Harrisonville) of the early 1960s. This is a preview:
