Pay no attention to this idiot that responds with "woke" pretty much every time a SLAC is mentioned. |
Colgate has significant Greek life, D1 Athletics, and if feels like a more pre-professional environment. It is also about 50% larger than Hamilton. If you are familiar with the other NESCAC schools you could almost think of Colgate as a slightly larger, "burlier" Middlebury. Hamilton is interesting because it is the merger of traditional Hamilton with Kenwood. Strong academics, great strengths in writing, and slightly isolated like most of the NESCAC schools. Both are great options. |
Colgate seems nothing like Middlebury, which has no Greek life and is pretty woke itself, if you remember the Charles Murray situation. If we're comparing to NESCACs, I would classify Colgate as a larger, more selective Trinity with D1 sports. |
| Colgate is a larger version of Colby or a secular version of a Holy Cross. Colgate has greek life, HC doesn’t. |
Both are very good options. Hamilton in Clinton, NY is in a less isolated location from Utica and new Hartford then Colgate in Hamilton, NY by about 20 miles. |
+++; my point of view also as someone raised and educated in WNY and the Finger Lakes, especially at the LACs. |
Nothing about Middlebury is "woke" beyond there being a group of naive kids existing at any school outside of Hillsdale, Jessup, and Liberty The Charles Murray situation is something constantly brought out by fools who have nothing but want to cry "woke". It was a nothingburger when it happened 9 years ago and it really isn't relevant to anything going on today. There are always going to be a few protesters anywhere if you are afraid of them you aren't very confident of your ideas. AS someone with experience with both schools Colgate and Middlebury have significant similarities outside of Greek life. But you be you....obviously ignorance is bliss in your case. |
It's not very "woke". I'd say the difference is that Greek life is more predominant at Colgate. Also Colgate is more pre-professional. Both great places. |
How would you rank these schools in terms of most to least woke: Bates, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Middlebury. This would be for a strong student who's interested in SLACs but doesn't want woke and probably doesn't quite have the stats for WASPB. |
These are not wildly different places and some are very tough admits If student wants to ED...visit now and develop a first choice. Or apply RD and visit once student sees where they are accepted to choose. |
This post includes comments on both of these schools: Finding LACs with intellectual vibe for balanced list https://share.google/ipWjeE8GFsxyW0jLq |
I've seen that before. It's generally accurate but a bit superficial. The Middlebury comment about vandalism is a couple of incidents over a decade ago. Makes about as much sense as blithering about Charles Murray. |
Most to Least: Bates, Hamilton/Middlebury, Colby, Colgate |
The vandalism occurred in 2020 and extended from the campus to the village. Spike in vandalism at Middlebury as students prepared to leave campus - VTDigger https://share.google/zuuJFBrN73h0tnoK5 |
I'm not sure why, but I always assumed Colby was woke. Is that not the case? |
