Do your neighbors know how to:

Build a fire
Process a deer/ turkey/ game bird
Frame a simple shed
Install a well pump
Clean load and fire a pistol or rifle

Or do .... anything that doesnt cause a traffic jam at Tysons?

And these same folks are terrified to come into the city where we live every day. I visited relatives over the holiday who were fretting about DH having to drive "downtown" and find parking after dark in my small, safe hometown city, to pick up pizza. I was like, this is a normal trip to the grocery store ror us, what is the big deal??

I married a lawyer. I am a lawyer. I live and work in DC Metro area. I can’t tell you how much I yearn for this… all the things you described. Sure, I like finer foods and travel—but this is the stuff that thrills me. Being a “foodie” is not a real hobby, IMO.

While I like travel, work overdid it for me. It turns out I love home and my soil right here. I love my community and I enjoy routine, frequent friendships. (Yes, friendship is more a verb and less a noun).

I’m divorced now— and I look for these characteristics and skills in a potential friend or mate. I’m not the only one who yearns for this.

As a person who can do half the stuff on that list, you sound like a tourist. And everybody hates a tourist.

Stereotypes, stereotypes.

I was surprised to find out that the Cornell student who went bear hunting (legally) and prepped the carcass in his dorm kitchen was an Asian-American engineer from Southern California with a longstanding archery and game hunting interest. That wasn't what I was expecting when I went looking to learn more. And I was genuinely interested in who was stirring the pot at college. The pics of the kitchen were a bit dramatic.

People rise to the occasion and learn the skills they need to survive. If the environment changes, people learn new skills. People also engage in a wide variety of pastimes. That's all.

Stereotypes for sure.

My husband grew up in a large inner city so you would look at him and never think he could do any of those things. He served in the military, went to survival school and he can do everything on that list and more.

Maybe expand your social circle.

NP.

Is this a serious question?

I’ve lived inside the beltway since 1999. The people living in this area rarely leave the bubble (except perhaps for a weekend in NYC or maybe summer-ing on Martha’s Vineyard).

The OP’s message was abundantly clear.

Dumb troll post.

These are all useful skills, but I highly doubt that a majority of Americans possess these skills - it's certainly not localized to the DMV.

For bunch of tough salt of the earth people, they’re really a bunch of wimps

You're perpetuating a lie to encourage hate for rural conservatives. My entire family (both sides) come from Rockbridge County. That's about as rural as you can get in VA and I have never once heard a terse word said about any of the groups you mention. I have however, heard them derided, nonstop, my entire life by people like you.

OP asked a stupid question sneering at others. Like begets like.

Only a fool would sneer at self sufficiency.

Interesting they are mostly white.
Average income $43,000

No thanks

Why is this interesting? The vast majority of people native to this country are white, and yes, some are poor.
