Its not like this stuff hasn't been discussed and debated every time there is a shutdown and the GOP always comes up with "but the military" -

I am OP. Promise you I am not a conservative or a Republican. I believe our military is quite capable at handling these jobs. It’s also a better alternative than sending them to cities.

And if no to sending military to airports, how about sending them to NationalParks and keeping them open? Pretty sure they can clean restrooms and are pretty good at search and rescue.

FYI - also sure the military could do TSA duties since there is also a shortage with those agents.

You have zero respect for the amount of training our military do, and for skills and knowledge they have.

Pretty sure I am the only one here who respects their ability to perform the necessary jobs.

You suggested they could clean restrooms in national parks and fill in for TSA. You are absolutely not respectful of their training, experience, and expertise. No, you are not. At all.

The military has air traffic controllers for their bases and ships.

These are not the same at all. The sheer amount of commercial flights and regulations dwarfs the military. Remember a military helicopter slammed into a commercial flight in January. Remember? The military isn’t trained or equipped to do ATC.

Literally what Prez Reagan did in the 80s

EXACTLY! not only can it be done, it has been done.

That was before deregulation. The amount of air traffic back then was nothing like today.

MAGA is largely made up of people who just cosplay military on the weekend and think they understand it because they play video games and spend all their money on “tactical gear”.

You do realize in boot camp they are cleaning restrooms? Among other areas.

Maybe. We’re now in the longest shutdown in history and the party in charge can only say the same BS every single day for 40 days now.

No Member of Congress wants to go home for Thanksgiving without funding air traffic control or restoring SNAP benefits. That's political suicide.

The House is already home! They aren’t working because Epstein.

You realize those people are IN boot camp, being trained for jobs that don’t include cleaning restrooms?

It’s infuriating how clueless they are about like everything!

I have an idea. Since our congressmen aren’t doing their job, why don’t they go clean the toilets?

You do realize that after boot camp, they don't really.

Lost in the “use the military!” talk is the fact that the military requires a combination of uniformed military, government civilians and contractors to actually run…ATC is a good example of this, where the function is carried out by a mixed force. Roughly a quarter of the total military force are furloughed, so our military is functioning well below normal capacity, it’s just not evident to the public…Taking from DoD for FAA is just robbing an already poor Peter to pay Paul.

Rank and file government employees aren't traveling anywhere because they are furloughed.

Prediction: Any and all current "political" appointees at any level/position will begin commandeering military aircraft to use as private air transport for their boondoggles. They will claim the military is required to transport them because their jobs are so important they cannot risk being stranded somewhere by commercial flights.

those military pilots and acts aren't being properly paid either right now

I think 95% of Americans would agree with this.

THIS. It's not like they're doing anything useful. For the amount of money we're paying them to do nothing, those latrines better SPARKLE!

Actually, you are wrong. Boot camp trains them to work as a unit. Technical training comes after boot camp.
