The top programs use the same criteria in selecting participants: FGLI, URM. If you are one or both, you have a good chance getting in a lot of top schools. |
FYI: Cornell is in the Ivy League. |
What are the top STEM summer programs? I know of RSI and I don’t think they use criteria mentioned about to select participants. |
Well only 3 of them are in the Top 10 for Engineering Schools. The others Princeton #11, Duke #17, Harvard #21, Yale #35. But cool. https://premium.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate |
We are discussing undergraduate, not doctorate. |
Did you even open the link. It is the top undergraduate engineering programs. |
It's the Top Engineering Undergraduate Programs that offer a Doctorate. |
STEM isn’t just engineering. All of those schools are top in STEM - but not necessarily all in engineering. |

Yes, I think top schools want to see bc calc if majoring in the sciences and many other kids take it at your school. It is a mark of rigor.
I decided or humanities might be different but then you should have corresponding liberal arts advanced classes. |
OP here. I wanted to give an update on my child’s results that can maybe help others in the future who are worried about a similar situation regarding math rigor. In the context of my DC’s highly competitive school in an overrepresented area where more than 90% of the kids finish BC Calc by the end of senior year, I agree with the above poster. I think that is one reason why my DC (science major) was waitlisted, in RD, by 10 T20 schools including 4 Ivys. However, they were accepted by 2 Ivys and will be heading to a HYP in the Fall! |
| You are only held to what your school offers. If you don’t have BC then you aren’t expected to take it. The school profile is the AOs guide to your school and the rigor offered. Take the best program you can within the offerings. Then excel in ECs, particularly those that are deep, meaningful and align w major to tell your story. |
Wow congrats! I don’t think it was the math that made a difference for your DCs app if he is headed to HYP! Mine is also headed to HYP with precalculus and AP stat. No Calc at all! |
