Pope Leo XIV says 'inhuman treatment of immigrants' in the U.S. isn't 'pro-life'

The MAGA split in the US Catholic church is going to be interesting.

If the Pope keeps it up I give it 6 months before someone in the Trump administration calls him leftist, communist, woke, enemy, or the like.

MAGA evangelicals don't really consider Catholics to be "Christian" in the way they are. It's not like they care what the highest Catholic cleric says.

There are a lot of MAGA Catholics. How do they reconcile the words of Pope Leo, Pope Francis and Jesus himself with their MAGA beliefs? Who knows, but they know they really don’t like women who want abortions and trans people.

There’s quite a few MAGA Catholics on the highest court of the land.

These people are Catholics in name only, just as many MAGA are Christians in name only.

Jesus' family were immigrants and refugees. He preached about welcoming the stranger, and loving thy neighbor, who is not just John next door.

Jesus's family went home after the danger passed. Something our "refugees" will never do.

So, you agree that we should welcome the refugees and treat them well?

It's weird that you are using religion to advocate/pressure others into agreeing with your political views. Catholic teachings are also strictly anti abortion and anti contraception. Are you willing to ban women's reproductive health as well? Or are you a hypocrite?

DP... In my opinion, it's a far greater hypocrisy and affront to Christianity to be anti-abortion and anti-contraception while ignoring the core teachings of Christ where it comes to taking care of the sick, the poor, the elderly, refugees and the marginalized, and showing compassion. Christ explicitly taught those values, and his command was clear, whereas he was silent on the areas of abortion and contraception.

Supporting access to abortion and contraception while being in favor of compassion and taking care of the sick and the poor and refugees diverges from Church doctrine (which has changed over time where it comes to abortion and contraception), but is still aligned to Gospel ethos and core teachings of Christ, whereas the opposite is not true. Claiming to be "pro-life" and only caring about abortion and contraception while ignoring the suffering of the marginalized and people in need (and leaving them to die from hunger or illness or persecution) contradicts the holistic ethic of life and dignity directly commanded and taught by Christ in the Gospels.

We are not discussing your opinion. We are discussing the positions of the catholic church and words of the pope.

Well, the words of the Pope are to treat immigrants as Christ would have - to love and take care of them.

And I am pointing out that you cannot pick and choose where we should listen to the Pope because 1) we still have separation of church and state and 2) most advocating for better treatment of immigrants are democrats who are pro choice and it is hypocritical to ignore the Pope's words where it is convenient to your arguments

Dems don't pretend to be religious, and they are more "pro life" in supporting babies and children, refugees, orphans and widows (something the Bible teaches) than MAGA.

Faith without deeds is dead - James 2:14-26

They don't pretend to be religious but love to invoke Christian teachings, including in this thread, when it fits their political position. Then just ignore all the other Christian viewpoints when they don't align with democratic policies. So do you want to implement all the Christian teachings you listed here plus those on abortion, women's roles, gender identity, and purity, etc? Picking and choosing is hypocritical.

Are you kidding? Do you really not understand that it’s the Catholic who hates abortion and loves throwing immigrants into alligator alcatraz that is the hypocrite? I’m not claiming to be Catholic so I can pick and choose whatever positions I want.

If you're not Catholic, who cares what Catholics support? You are a hypocrite too if you are trying to use the church's teachings in some sort of gotcha but ignoring the rest of the teachings. Make your argument with whatever informs your own beliefs.

The point of the thread is to point out that even the pope thinks the maga “pro-lifers” are full of shit.

Maga pro lifers think the pope is full of shit, so.

So they’re not Catholic either.

Uh, they are. A conservative catholic influencer did an entire episode today on how cringe the summit was.

American Catholics have been at odds with the past 2 popes. It doesn't make them "not catholic." Not everyone responds to unpleasant leadership changes by declaring that they are leaving the country, etc.

Most American Catholics were huge fans of Pope Francis

and are now very impressed with Pope Leo.

It's just a few RWNJs who find themselves at odd with or think they can judge the Pope. Most of us Catholics have a bit more humility.

Best two Popes we've had in a long time. Some Catholics in the US have really lost the thread and all of their humility.

I know some MAGA Catholics who, while Pope Francis was alive, said they didn't think Jesuits were "real Catholics." I am praying for a schism.

Which is incredibly funny since Gorsuch and Kavanaugh went to Jesuit high schools, and Scalia all went to both a Jesuit high school and then to Georgetown (also Jesuit).

Exactly. Many Catholic priests believe they are progressive, but the fact that they shore up the regressive social norms and backwards belief of the Catholic Church means they churn out conservatives.

No, most priests I know are appalled by the views of MAGA Catholics.

It wouldn't be a split. It'd just be a bunch of MAGA leaving the Church (and to hear them talk, it really seems like they already left). The Church is worldwide.

The Jesuit colleges churn out more progressives than conservatives - which of course is why the "trad" Catholics don't like them.

Not just the Jesuits -- lots of orders are the same. The fringe groups are where MAGAs are coming from.

Not Catholic or Christian and I wholeheartedly agree - the Pope is absolutely correct. We've all known and spoke of this, but so great to have the Pope say it. Maybe some of Trump's voters will take heed and think about what the Pope is saying.

It really doesn't get any more anti-Catholic than Trump. A real Catholic would not support or vote for such a liar who wants to kill everyone except himself.

If you are at odds with the pope, you need to redefine your Catholic religion without the word "Catholic." Yes, you are then "not catholic." There are plenty of alternative Christian religions to choose from.

I agree and wish they would leave. Unfortunately they will be happy insulting the Pope and insisting that the "fewer and truer" are the true devout Catholics, just like they did with Pope Francis. I wish all of these converts who apply their evangelical zeal to Catholicism would take off.
