Isn't the assumption that those would be nearly free due to merit? Otherwise, I 100% agree with you.

I suspect that they get down to State costs with merit, not nearly free. There are schools on that list that are far better than most state schools.

Such as? I would choose one of our excellent state schools any day over that random list of "hidden value" schools.
DP

I agree.

Yep, economy is going to hell. Not the time to take a chance on a flailing private. This list is a decade too late.

Some of these schools have big endowments. Depauw has an endowment of almost a billion. Denison's is a little over a billion. Berry has an endowment of 1.2 Billion. Santa Clara has a 1.55 billion dollar endowment. Trinity has an endowment of 1.84 billion. Furman has an 828 million dollar endowment.

My middle child is at a private on the hidden value list. They are at the top there with tons of opportunities and would’ve crumbled in a more intense environment. Their stats were good, they could’ve gotten into more selective, but we prioritized fit, and it was absolutely the right choice. No point in being at a higher ranked school if you’re stressed and unable to take advantage of all it has to offer. Having kids with different personalities in different selectivity ranges really highlights fit above all else for success. Very happy with both schools.

Not sure why you needed to do an eye roll, it’s true, and I was complimenting a wide range of schools as being wonderful options. Maybe save the eye rolls for those that think anything outside the T20 is worthless.

Not PP, but like yours, my DC loves to be pushed and challenged at every turn. (For the record, he graduated from an MCPS magnet with a perfect transcript, and scored 1600 on the SAT.) He attended one of the Selingo list schools noted in this thread and was pushed and challenged, and is doing very well now.

Students who need a challenge are not found only at elite schools.

I agree and don’t wish to derail this thread as I would rather compliment all the schools.

Jeff Selingo's lists are total crap.

Ithaca College ??? He must be kidding or he must be receiving compensation for promoting garbage like this.

I have one kid at Davis and one at Santa Clara. Each school has been a good match. It wouldn’t have been a good match in reverse. I love that I’m spending less to educate, feed and house the one at Davis than I spent for his private HS tuition. We are in CA, and not many of his classmates got in to Davis. I love the attention my other DC is getting in his engineering program at SCU. Classes are taught by profs, not ta’s.

these are top 150 schools. not hidden to the DCUM crowd and regionally very well known.

you think kids in Wisconsin and Chicagoland aren't applying to Marquette?

Or kids in Northern California dont know Santa Clara?

Or kids in DCUM world aren't fully aware of Loyola Maryland?

you seem like a rude and deeply insecure person who is projecting your insecurities on people who aren't. how sad.

you can read the book for free at the library. on kindle, it only cost me $15. I just finished it and definitely got more than $15 worth of advice and insight. the list is just in the appendix and it includes a longer commentary on each selected school. but the book is really not about the dream school list alone.

I think Selingo went to Ithaca College.

According to a quick Google search, you are correct. He attended Wyoming Valley West high school in Northeastern Pennsylvania which is among the worst high schools in the country.

Ithaca College has experienced declining enrollment and serious financial problems for many years.

Ithaca College has a 70% acceptance rate and a four year graduation rate of about 68%.

The School of Communications is its main attraction as well as its theater program.

Recommending Ithaca College as some sort of great value school or as an undiscovered (hidden) gem is total garbage. Great place to enjoy four years of socializing and pretending that one attends nearby Ivy League Cornell University.
