You realize he is in charge of safety and compliance, right? You realize background checks fall under both safety and compliance responsibilities, right?

That was before Taylor's reorg. Jones is now Chief Safety Officer in the Division of Safety & Emergency Management. Compliance falls under the HR division.

Sure, but the alert to MCPS leadership happened in Dec. 2024, under the prior structure. The new org structure took hold July 1. So surely Marcus would have been involved, given that compliance was under him at the time.

This might be semantics, but even when Jones's job title included the word "compliance," the department of compliance was still under HR. Has been for years.

Unless they check more often

How often do they run the background checks?

Only upon hire. It should be done at least every two years

Nope, yearly.

Yikes. Are we supposed to pay for it as well like what we did before we were hired?

Probably, just as long term volunteers do --pay $ to get a background check done to volunteer. It's so ridonc for teachers to have to pay.

In what other school system are veteran teachers regularly paying for new background checks?

Why do you care what other school systems are doing? Don't be trying to keep up the McCarthys over in I don't know.....Charles county or something. As the largest school district in MD, working with the State when needed should be figuring out how it happens, not hard working posters on this board.

Everyone seems to want to blame someone else.
Making excuses get us nowhere.

Keep my kids in the schools can’t afford better sadly.

What does it take to get fired in MCPS? Apparently a lot if you are in central. April reapplied for her job and didn't get it. Got sent to work in a middle school. They didn't want her. And now she is listed at Infants and Toddlers (I'm sure they don't want her). How long can MCPS do this shuffle?? Why is the accountability so different between teachers and central?

Anonymous wrote:April Key needs to be fired, not just demoted. And if anyone is left in the chain of command that was letting this all happen between 2019 and today, they need to go to.

Good lord, it's going to take years just to unearth all the ways that Jack Smith and Monifa McKnight harmed this system, and lord knows how long to fix them.

Tried charter in 2015—wasn’t for me. I’m considering just getting a part-time job to pay for Catholic next year. I really don’t want to, though… sigh.

Where did you try it? In MoCo or DC or elsewhere? Why wasn't it for you?

I care because background checks aren’t cheap and paying for one regularly would be an expense most people weren’t warned we would have.

Apparently even volunteers who are going on field trips pay to get it done, the district doesn't cover for them either.

What is MCPS going to do between this week and start of school in a few weeks? Have each and every staff working with 160+k students completed an actual background check, fingerprinting, CPS? They send out messages "your students are safe". No not all students feel safe. And parents certainly aren't sleeping well from knowing there is no accountability nor transparency. So....mcps?

As a volunteer for eighteen years the background check was done but it was just the one time and I have to do the compliance modules every three years. I can't imagine paying for the background check annually, though. That expense should be borne by the school district.

Well, these are certainly questions that need answers. Perhaps the BOE should be getting those answers for us?
