No. He is doing this so that UVA staff and programs aren't punished for the games he played with the DEI stuff. It's not fair considering how centrist UVA is, there are a dozen scoops that are fast more "woke" than UVA

But he played games with the DEI stuff and this administration isn't playing games. They are a wrecking ball and you've got to keep your head down the next 4 years. Even wealthy schools like Harvard see the writing on the wall and are cooperating with this administration on the DEI stuff. Expect to see significant shifts in hiring and admissions over the next few years and if the Republicans make this a platform issue, expect those shifts to become permanent.

DEI and Anti-semitism are smokescreens. He’s going after all colleges:

“These are all smokescreens [DEI, anti-semitism] Trump views colleges as his political enemies, so he is doing everything he can to tear them down. That may be because college graduates overwhelmingly for his Democratic opponent, or because college professors produce the research that undermines his baseless claims about everything from climate change to tax cuts. Or he may be influenced by a branch of conservative evangelicals who believe that they need to take over education and other realms.

With Trump, the simplest answer is often the most likely. After winning the Nevada Republican caucuses in 2016 due to support from people who never went to college, he infamously proclaimed, "I love the poorly educated." He's now doing his best to ensure more Americans fit that description.”

This was by Ryan Teague Beckwith- msnbc opinion piece

Full article is scary. Financial aid/loans/pell grants are targeted to go away in the Megabill….

He's trying to change the default culture in higher education. And it might not end with him. Attaching colleges is exceedingly popular politically. Republicans might turn it into the next generational campaign issue.

Until they realize he’s going after all colleges. It’s a fascist takeover

Yes, wrecking balls definitely stop when you keep your head down.

The only way to fight fascists...is to fight.

They're not fascists. They're ideologues, like the people that allowed antisemitism to run amok at these colleges. Like the ideologues that engaged in racial discrimination in hiring and admissions. Like the ideologues that promoted cancel culture

They are fascists who promote dumb ass propaganda that the proles regurgitate.

Then you don't understand the meaning of the term fascist. Also your disdain for the "prole's" is showing

Just like I said, proles love to regurgitate propaganda that the fascists are pushing.

MAGAs are pure trash. GFY.

Who wants to break it to him that isn’t how it works?

UVA is bigger than one person. The university is strong and has been for generations. This too shall pass. I’m for keeping it on the list.

In his letter to alums, he said he’d only been planning on staying for one more year anyways and made the decision to save funding/jobs versus one more year of his own job.

My UVA kid’s reaction was, “if he stepped down it was because he put our interests and the university’s interests first.” He is a good person. It’s sad. My UVA student is sad (and afraid they will get rid her her major). Let’s hope the BOV does right by the students and picks someone good not just a political puppet.

What is their major?

It’s a bad sign that UVA is bowing to trumps weaponized justice department but with the new board, who knows what else they might do to this excellent school.

The next governor will not be a Republican.

Which is why they made sure to push Ryan out now; the writing is on the wall that they are going to get slaughtered in November.

But the BOV will be controlled by Youngkin picks through at least 2027. So there’s not a ton Spanberger will be able to do for at least a couple of years—unless she decides to play serious hardball, which would be fantastic. Unlike Florida and Texas, VA has a Democratic legislature and will soon have a Democratic governor. They will not aid and abet the destruction of higher ed as the lawmakers in those states have.

Hopefully. Ds really need to grow a spine to fight these a-holes before they destroy everything.

I agree. What would hardball look like in this case? (Cucinelli was my first thought when this all started. Complete and utter nightmare!!)

Yup. Stop bringing a butter knife to a gun fight. Kick some tail. Biden should have been meaner. Especially in the last few months when he was a lame duck. He and Garland were way too nice to these losers.

Bowing to bullies is never the right choice. And the BOV of a stacked with Youngkin extremists so the future is not good for UVA.

If tiki torch white pride parade won’t cause a mass exodus, nothing will.

Which had nothing to do with the University.

Yeah, they might even allow a conservative to be on the faculty, which is completely unsatisfactory.

Oh come on

It looks like there are 18 faculty donating to liberal candidates for every faculty member donating to conservative candidates.

Funny how conservatives who constantly attack higher education, liberal arts values, science, humanities, and intellectualism aren't well represented at a prestigious college. Are you saying political diversity hires should be made?

It wasn't that long ago that schools would require you to submit"diversity statements" in the hiring process.

Politics are a choice. Race, ethnicity, etc aren't.

Not discriminating against them would be enough

Ok I'll bite. How are they being discriminated against? Is it discrimination to not hire a history professor who denies redlining? Is it discrimination to not want a creationist to teach evolutionary biology?

Totally different. Those people had nothing to do with UVA.

The organizer was an alum.

From decades earlier.
