APS Holiday 6/6

The Cabinet needs another paid holiday. Sorry kids your dances and fields trips will be cancelled.

This is such a total and complete joke APS would suddenly give this day off at this point in the year.

I’m a loyal Democrat and I am sick of one party rule in this County and both Boards filled with overly progressive candidates falling over each other to prove who is the best liberal ever and it’s because of the sham caucus process where so few people pick our candidates. These people do not represent majority views. JD Spain in county board is most recent example. Total blowhard poser.

APS is too liberal for me and I’ve been a Democrat my entire life. Private for us now. And I know you don’t care, so no need to tell me. As someone who moved to APS for the schools and wanted to send kids to public school, it’s depressing.

Some of my kids are in APS, but one is in a very progressive private. Not a chance in hell the private is going to change their schedule last minute like this. I don’t think Arlington leaders understand what it really means to be progressive.

This is crazy. The main tradition of Eid al-Adha is sacrificing an animal, which no Muslim schoolkids are going to be doing. And going to prayers which can be after school. And the celebration lasts for 3 days so it's not like anyone is really missing out on anything by being at school for a few hours on Friday.

Wait til the School Board finds out about all the other faiths that exist in the world, there are numerous holidays for Bahai'i, Zoroastrians, lots of other religions.

Right. This wasn’t one of the ‘original’ holidays that triggered this silly calendar being created. If you can add this last minute what else can be added. There are holidays all the time that are significant to someone.

No, check the weekly update, there's another one

Two Eids?

This is for Eid al Adha

I think this is a great time for APS to reconsider going back to excused absences for religious observations.

Yes! Unless a high enough percentage (25%?) of people will be absent due to the holiday, have school and let it be excused. Just like it used to be.

I got a response back that says we are putting this for a school board vote because it is our calendar policy to to have this day off from school. Total tone deaf response.

Is somebody compiling the list of activities that would be canceled? Or parents get their money back from the Busch Gardens trip or is APS floating that? Is there time to change Field days? Who’s paying for cost associated with changes of rentals for that?

Feedback I got from high school PTA is that it doesn’t impact us since graduation is already done and kids can study at home for finals that day.

I got the same one. It did say there are attempting to reschedule events, I don't see how TJ can reschedule their music competition or that there will be enough time for many of the other events. It's not like volunteers for dances and field trips can always reschedule.

I would hope TJ could still go. It is very little staff that goes and they already have buses paid for. It isn't like schools dont do events in Saturdays sometimes. Band and orchestra teachers are usually committed. But who knows
