Outside of wrinkles, what was your rude awakening to getting old?

Elders in the family passing.
Failing eyesight.
Health issues.
Bad news came fast and furious.

Losing my once sharp mind and memory.

My back itching.

Food being stuck in my teeth after every meal.

Oh there are so many I had to compile myself a mini-list:
Lol.

• Being addressed as M’aam.

• When I looked at pictures of my schoolmates on Facebook & realize everyone now looks old.

• When the music in the grocery store consists of songs I used to jam to in the clubs! 🤭

• When others put on my eyeglasses then take them off quickly by exclaiming “Oh. Ouch!!”

People my age dying and while there’s still a bit of surprise but not like when we were younger, more of a “yeah that happens to guys in their late 50s sometimes” like death just stops feeling tragic and more kind of one of those things that will become more common.

A little self-entitled Gen Z girl pushed past my elderly father in a line to catch up with some friends. Didn't say excuse me or anything. Just literally pushed him aside. My father started to tell her off and she got combative. So I stepped in and told her to move along. She persists to argue so I repeated just move along. Finally, I told her to hush her mouth. She seemed shocked. She looked at me and asked, "How old are you?" (I'm 53). And then very seriously declared, "It's amazing that I'm only 25 and so much more mature than you."

Gen Z really is an obnoxious lot lacking in basic manners. But I've noticed a lot of ageism from them. It's wild.

Ageism is every bit as hateful and harmful as racism.

So true. Yet hatred for older people seems to be the norm now.

As for PP with the elder dad in the grocery store who got SHOVED by a young woman: If that situation ever happens again, be very loud, very clear and tell the offender that "You need to be aware that assaulting an elderly person is a FELONY. Shall we call the police and file a complaint?"

Me too-- my whole life but so much worse in my late 40s-- but HRT was a game changer. Progesterone is the best sleep aid I've ever tried.

How much do you take? I'm on progesterone as well but don't see any effect on my sleep.

DP. I take 600 mg of progesterone (based on blood tests), plus I take ashwagandha and melatonin some nights, and I don't drink alcohol anymore or caffeine after 2 pm. I went from averaging 3 hours a night with wakeups to a steady 7 hours, and I feel much better now.

Becoming more sensitive to things people say to me or about the world. Getting over sensitive in general.

The knowledge that that cute woman walking by is my kid’s age, and college kids now are young enough to be my grandchildren.

Getting diagnosed with osteoporosis at 49.

Two years of Fosamax, weight gain, weight bearing exercise (oh, and cleaning up my diet) and taking enough daily supplements to choke a horse did absolutely nothing. Now I’m 55 with severe osteoporosis.

The real realty hit me with when arthritis started, not walking as fast as I use to- just lower endurance in general. Aches, here and there and catching colds that I never use to. Yeah, 60’s are officially here.

arthritis too.

I loved to exercise, run and hike and now it is a struggle. So many idiots say you need to move more to ease arthritis pain and that is complete bs. The more I exercise, the more I hobble when I walk.

My hip makes a popping noise while hiking. No pain. Just sounds like two pieces of wood clunking together. Otherwise, I feel truly grateful for my health so far. I'm 57.
