I want healthcare for all American citizens but it will never happen as long as we have endless immigration because there is no way to account for costs. It isn't right that people come across the border, sometimes already pregnant, and have multiple children in order to avail themselves of free services that US citizens cannot access for themselves despite paying taxes for a lifetime. I would love to offer a good life to everyone who wants to come here but it's not realistic. The current system is unsustainable. The people complaining here are mostly wealthy posters who are immune to the problems the rest of us deal with due to illegal immigration. They have access to great healthcare, private schools and gated communities. My kids attend schools that are literally falling apart while a ridiculous amount of money is spent on programs to support illegal immigrants in our pyramid. Every year my property tax bill goes up. We pay out of pocket for our healthcare and the costs are insane. Also, it isn't just poorer immigrants who abuse birth right citizenship. There are wealthy mothers from all over the world who come to the US specifically to give birth. Not wanting to subsidize all of this abuse with our tax dollars does not make us terrible people. No other civilized country in the world has the immigration issues that we do.

Stop voting for republicans. This country can more than afford to pay for healthcare for kids.

If the billionaires pay their fair share sure, but they don't. America is funded off the backs of the middle class and you're killing us.

Uhm, you should consider voting for Dems if that’s what you believe. Welcome!

DP here. I DO vote for Dems. I believe in affordable healthcare for ALL US citizens (not just the poor) and believe in investing in quality public education and affordable childcare for all US citizens.

AND, I believe in secure borders and deportation of those without legal status to be here. I don't believe any warm body should be allowed to claim asylum and roam the country free indefinitely while we decide what we are going to do with that. And I support a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship.

Sure hon.

Letting this mother stay with her potentially terminally ill child while they receive medical care is the right thing to do. If you disagree, it’s not about politics at this point, it’s about your values. Strongly suggest you look at those first and then vote for the party that is in alignment with those values.

I don’t think you’re being honest about who you voted for.

I don't care what you believe. Not every Dem supports illegal immigration. We wouldn't have to "let" her stay with her child if she didn't come here to begin with. That's on her.

1. Every year my property tax bill goes up. Where do you live? Property taxes are going up everywhere. That doesn't mean the rise is directly or exclusively related to undocumented migrants. In reality, undocumented migrants actually contribute to local revenues through various taxes. In Virginia, for example, they pay between $51.9 million and $67.1 million annually in property taxes, either directly as homeowners or indirectly through rent payments that cover landlords' property tax obligations. Nationwide, undocumented immigrants paid approximately $10.4 billion in property taxes in 2022.

2. We pay out of pocket for our healthcare and the costs are insane. Undocumented migrants are not the reason your healthcare is "insane." Look to rising hospital and drug prices, an aging population with chronic conditions, and administrative costs for the reason for increased healthcare prices. In reality, migrants generally use less medical care than citizens and pay taxes into systems they can’t access.

Anything else you'd like to blame on the undocumented as a group?

+1 You know who isn't paying their fair share in taxes thanks to very highly paid lawyers and accountants who specialize in tax avoidance? Donald Trump and Elon Musk and their friends like the private equity bros making billions off the backs of people paying ridiculous costs of healthcare. The only "accomplishment" of the Trump presidency will be cutting taxes for the ultra-rich.

I'm sorry that people want to obsess over the cost to taxpayers for an undocumented woman and the cost of her terminally ill US Citizen child, but you're missing the big picture.

Some of us are capable of being angry about both things. The only reason her child is a citizen is because she broke the law in the first place. It's not the flex you think it is.

I hope that the doctors here can coordinate with doctors in Honduras to continue this child's treatment. This case illustrates why birthright citizenship needs to end. Don't break the law and reside in the country illegally in the first place if you don't want to risk having your family split up.

For many years our immigration laws were not enforced at all. Illegals have been extremely comfortable living here and taking advantage of social services without any fear of deportation. Both parties were responsible for the issue. The democrats liked the idea of future voters and republicans liked the cheap, undeclared labor. The country reached a tipping point where US citizens have had enough. I have voted for democrats because Trump and the current GOP is a total clown show but I strongly support border enforcement. I don't think that we can enact the types of programs that will support American citizens if we have millions of illegals in the country and there is no accountability.

Thank you. Especially the bold. Public education and healthcare in particular are currently buckling under the weight of illegal immigrants. Anyone who bothers to look can see that this is directly affecting the level of service those places are able to provide (or not provide) as a result. This isn't theoretical. It's happening right before your eyes as we speak.

Ah, the "illegals are raising my premiums" lie. Yeah, the insurance companies love that one, as they record profits.

Your premiums are going up because you have no other options and Mr. CEO needs another vacation house.

Again, it can be both. Let's address BOTH.

+1. This is why we need a third party. The middle class is being destroyed by both parties. Americans overwhelming want secure borders and less immigration but Democrats are doubling down. This is a big reason why Biden lost and why democrats will continue to lose.

I don't care what you believe. Not every Dem supports illegal immigration. We wouldn't have to "let" her stay with her child if she didn't come here to begin with. That's on her.

She came here looking for asylum (legal!) and was taken into custody "last week after attending routine check-ins with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Louisiana>" So doing everything correctly, not roaming the country freely.
You don't like asylum laws, fine. Change them. But the law is as it is now. You don't just deport people willy nilly who are following the correct steps!
And if you do so, you find a way to make sure the stage 4 cancer citizen and minor gets his meds because we are the United Freaking States of Merica, not some backwater authoritarian cruel regime

2. How often does the kid need the lifesaving medicine? Is it available in Honduras?

Are people even asking common sense stuff like this or are we just sticking to outrage and not actually helping this child?

Also, we need to give the mother some agency. Possibly she was coerced into taking her child with her. That should be investigated. But if she decided it was in her child’s best interest to stay with her - like maybe she knows more about his cancer treatment than we do and determined he could get the treatment he needs in Honduras - then we should respect her parental decisions.

The common sense questions should be asked in court through due process required by our laws before a US citizen is forcibly removed from the country without due process. Agree?

OK. Let me know when Republicans come up with an immigration policy that recognizes that undocumented labor underpins entire industries, and one that doesn't involve moats and machine gun towers.

Yes. Every day and twice on Sunday. She made the choice to jump the border and drop an anchor baby. That kid does not convey legal status to his mom.
