Really depends on the private, too, OP. St. Albans, Sidwell, Potomac, and maybe GDS, then these are pretty strong stats. Landon, Maret, Burke, not so much, then you may want to look just a tier down: BC, Bates, Hamilton, Wesleyan. |
Because it's tiny. Smaller than many high schools. |
This is not really true. All not accepted EA are deferred; they then get another bite at the apple in RD. Of course, this is still a way lower admissions percentage than applying ED to Chicago or WashU. As mentioned above, don't bother applying ED to Williams and, to a lesser extent, Bowdoin. |
Apply as history, ED1 or 2 at chicago and do WashU for the other 1 or 2. Ask the private school counselor directly for data on gpa that have been admitted to these two from your high school. The GPA may be too low for any T15. It is from our private. Emory or BC ED would be less reachy. Every private gpa range is different. Ask and be clear you want honesty. |
Bowdoin and Midd have too many ny applicants. From the DMV these two take 3rd decile kids in ED every year, unhooked. Ivies never go that low. Its HS dependent and region is a big factor |
At our dc private, these would be great stats for middlebury ed |
BS. |
For DD’s private DMV school, the above is true for Middlebury but not Bowdoin. |
+1 Definitely not Bowdoin. |
How do you all seem to know this!?!? Ugh. I have an unhooked humanities boy coming up and would have blithely thought that ED at any school would confer an advantage. Anyone want to tell the rest of us where ED counts? Thanks- |
You need to look at the acceptance history on Naviance. I posted above unhooked DC got into Amherst ED. Naviance showed every year 1-2 students accepted to Amherst and Williams, 0-1 to Swarthmore, and 0-1 to Pomona. I couldn't be sure they were unhooked, but most in DC's cohort are and the acceptances were steady over the 6 year period listed. I saw 13 people in his class were applying to Amherst (the most popular application and his favorite), and thought he should try ED in an effort to stand out among them. As far as we know, no other kids were applying ED. He got in. Tippy top stats, and a demonstrably good fit for an open curriculum, but no other hooks. |
Agree acceptance history is a crucial data point. The problem with Naviance is you can't be certain about hooks and stats are obviously not the only important point about an application. But it does give you a sense of whether people have gotten in ED, and with what stats. |
A boy is an advantage at some schools but I don’t know which ones |
Not true at my kid’s school for either Bowdoin or Midd. Some recruited athletes in top 20-25%, but no unhooked kids (at least no hooks we know of) outside top decile. Give me actual examples, please. |
+100, I would ED1 WashU. It’s a rigorous school and Economics dept will be strong. |
