We are talking about *Roman Catholic* priests. Of course there are for example, Episcopalian women priests. In Catholic teaching, at the moment a bishop ordains a woman as a priest, they are both automatically excommunicated. I’m not arguing that it’s theologically correct, but it has been the unwavering teaching of the Catholic Church, so you can’t pin it on JPII.

Francis has been an advocate for greater respect of and increased roles for women. He is a huge voice for the poor, for immigrants . He’s firmly anti-abortion but has clearly stated that it is not a single great sin that eclipses others, specifically failure to love your neighbor. He chastised Vance for false teaching. He’s been good on the abuse scandal, taking responsibility and creating structures to prevent it. Like it or not, the Pope has big voice on the world stage. I much prefer a voice like Francis compared to what we could have.

Prayer is not like some competition where if we reach the right number the Pope will be spared. Prayer is mostly about our relationships to God and to one another.

I can pin it on JP2. The women's ordination movement picked up steam in the post-Vatican 2, women's right movement era of the 1970s. JP2 then comes in and says, "We are all in agreement and shall never talk about this again" that women can't be priests. What are they so afraid of? Jesus says, "Be Not Afraid", but these clerics are really afraid of women become priests for whatever their reasons are. Then, fairly recently Francis told a group of nuns who asked for women's ordination that they should "go find another Church". What kind of person would tell a group of nuns, "Go find another Church". Really!?!?! Yeah, I agree Francis is better than many alternatives, but making up bs reasons why women can't become priests is seriously harming the Church. Most Catholic women are tired of this bs.

I think “most Catholic women” have exactly zero interest in pursuing priesthood. The women advocating for female ordination seem far less concerned with the ministry of personal sacrifice than they are with the external trappings of power and worldly status.

Most Catholic men don't have interest in pursuing the priesthood either. It's a huge problem, because there aren't enough priests to support the congregations. But there isn't any reason to believe that if women could be ordained they wouldn't be called in similar numbers to men.

This is sexist drivel. Thanks to PP for speaking out.

This is probably why there are so many women in the clergy in various Protestant denominations in the US; men won't take those salaries.

In earlier times, the Church existed to soak up younger sons and the unemployed. Now that jobs are more plentiful, no one wants to be a priest. If they dont ordain women, US priests will continue to come from other countries

Not only does the priesthood or ministry pay badly, but few and fewer people actually believe in God these days, so fewer and fewer people attend religious services. It doesn't look good for the future, either, as non-religious kids grow up and marry each other and are totally lacking a "Sunday services" mindset.

I just read that the percentage of Americans who identify as religious started to collapse after 1990 (when it was above 90%) and bottomed out in 2014 at 63% which is where it has stayed ever since. So I think the uncommitted all got peeled off because there's no career or social reason to pretend to be religious anymore. Those who are left are true believers.

Where did you read that? Could you provide a link? I though more people left more recently - during the pandemic. they found that they didn't miss church.

I get a very gay vibe from him. I think a lot of reasons why he is open to more lgbtq acceptance is because he is gay. It makes no sense to invite lgbtq people even married ones into the church and say statements like who am I to judge and then tell women they should go find another church.

Francis’ “open door” policy is consistent with his Jesuit training and the Ignatian maxim that “We have no objection to going in the enemy’s door so long as our purpose is to bring him out of our own.”

His nun-scolding is consistent with being a very unpleasant human being with a short temper and no manners.

Agreed. I think he is popular only because he goes after some of the other bad behavior of the vatican such as lavish spending. He has his own demons and yes seems very reactionary.

IME Many priests of his generation are closeted gay males at the same time they are male chauvinists like straight men of their generation. This also explains the framing of abortion as “shame”, which is a lot of projection imo.

I don't think it's limited to his generation.

I get a very gay vibe from him. I think a lot of reasons why he is open to more lgbtq acceptance is because he is gay. It makes no sense to invite lgbtq people even married ones into the church and say statements like who am I to judge and then tell women they should go find another church.

IME Many priests of his generation are closeted gay males at the same time they are male chauvinists like straight men of their generation. This also explains the framing of abortion as “shame”, which is a lot of projection imo.

I don't think it's limited to his generation.

TBF While there may be closeted guys among younger priests, they are more open to women's issues. These older guys are somewhat hopeless.
