Middle School start times

After school this week, I saw piles (had to literally step over some, ha) of kids loving finally finding “their people” at D&D club. Drama and music kids rehearsing for the MS musical. Kids painting sets and props for the musical. Community service activities. Tons of kids getting tutoring from their teachers, for free, getting both help and connection. The positive energy was palpable (the musical looks great!). The MS after school program is the heart of middle school.

Yes let’s continue to make kids get up at 5:30 am so they can have this after school program.

Get a grip. E will shift by only 30 minutes and be a win win for all. They can still have their previous after school activities, just half an hour later.

Yes, like the MS start time used to be. That’s great.

Because it's terrible. Leave it alone.

30 minutes later for high school is bad.

30 minutes later for elementary school is beyond ridiculous.

No one wins by changing the schedule

Get ready whiners. Option E is coming whether you like it or not.

Why do you say this? They also recommended C2. Both OTS and the company approved. I think that one is way better and is also cost neutral.

The report states that FCPS wants middle schoolers and high schoolers out before elementary school kids for childcare purposes - older kids can watch younger kids. Also option C2 is too drastic for middle school and would cut their after school programs.

Then they should just keep everything as is. With c2, high schoolers will be home. Meanwhile, who is watching these kids when parents need to work and school starts at almost 10?

They aren’t keeping everything as is bc the current start time for MS is 7:30 am and isn’t good for them. They will get pushed to the 8 am slot and everyone will deal.

Sorry, but that is the stupidest thing to dosrupt everyone's lives with terrible schedules, so 2 grades of middle school kids can continue to be hormonal difficult middle schoolers who continue to get not enough sleep because they are on their phones all night.

Why should 11 other grades of students get screwed to appeased a handful of parents of the 2 grades of middle school?

Keep the current schedule.

Middle schoolers are fine with the current schedule

LOL, no, they're not at all. C2 it is. E defeats the whole point of this exercise by not shifting MS late enough, and causes everyone else to shift as well. "Ease of communication"? What a horsesh!t justification... "Dear parents, next year Larla's school will be shifting their bell schedule to <X>". Doesn't really matter what X is for communication purposes.

c2 is the best option. It gives middle school a late start and reasonable hours for ES and high school.

E will be chosen as it’s the least disruptive. Everyone will have to compromise by 30 minutes.

I would much rather my elementary-aged child came home late than my middle schooler. My middle schooler can get home early and take care of herself while I finish up work. My elementary schooler can't do that.

I would like to keep what we have now. It's only two years and the kids get the fun after school activities.
