TKPK or CCDC?

When I was single or a newlywed no kids I lived in urban walkable areas.

When my wife had a 1 and 3 year old that would be a horrible place to live.

Again…silly comment. Why would you want to live somewhere where you have to drive everywhere just because you have kids…vs still having a SFH with the option to walk for any convenience close by and the option to drive somewhere if you want.

CCDC should be renamed “b0omerville”. Everyone there is so old and decrepit lol.

It's one of the few places where you can buy a reasonably priced condo with an elevator. That's why.

About 1/3 older folks in CCDC. Not sure why there is any downside to that at all. All have lived there for decades, raised families there and still love and care about the community. They keep the Avalon Movie theatre in business. God forbid people age gracefully in place. We’ll all be there before we know it. For families with young kids, like us, it’s like having a couple extra sets of grandparents on your street. Tons and toms of families with young kids. Swing by on Halloween, especially Ct. Ave then Rittenhouse and it’s a pretty amazing experience for kids.

Exponentially more poverty in Takoma Park (1 in 10 adults there have incomes below the poverty line, per latest census data, five times the rate in CCDC).

Depends on your vibe. If you like more eclectic, hippie, community focused, go with TkPK. If you’re a little more straight edge, CCDC

DC public schools are not better than Takoma Park schools.

And if in Maryland, you are in state for all the Maryland colleges.

Look in both and base it on which house you like best. If the houses are a toss up, choose Takoma Park for sure. Better schools, better services, more community.

The public schools in CCDC are most certainly better than the public schools in Takoma Park.

Absolutely not.
They are not even in the same league.
TPMS & Blair are leagues above Deal and JR

You are confusing the selection magnet with the reputation of Blair its self. Put it this way; even after brining in some of the best students from a massive county to prop up Blair’s test scores, it still manages to rank towards the bottom of the county. Don’t compare the best school in a city to lower ranked school in a county.

There's no confusion. You’re the one who is clueless.
Blair is the most decorated, popular school in the county and their SAT test scores are not towards the bottom. Their test scores are better than JR'S.
Blair runs circles around the best school in the city.

For the typical, well resourced, non-magnet kid, Blair and JR are more alike than different. Blair is much bigger, so will have more AP and activity options, but both have ENOUGH of everything to be a comprehensive school that can meet the needs of almost all kids. Neither are Whitman or Langley, but one is not leagues above the other.

Whitman and Langley nothing compared to Blair, except they have lot more white, rich kids.
But then again, that's DCUM flavor.

And better student outcome but I guess that isn’t how you measure schools. Your bias is showing, if Blair is so great it must be the students who let it down is that what your point is? Maybe we can create a magnet program that attracts serious students to elect to bus into the school to lift the averages of the IB kids so that locals take unfounded pride and get distracted form the vast majority of outcomes. Then they can go online and brag about some Asian kid from Bethesda who was a NMSF. That sounds like it might work, correction it sounds like it is already working.

Wrong again.
And your bias isn't showing?

Well if you disregard College preparedness, college acceptance rates and test scores I guess you could be right. It’s not bias if it’s if is the simple facts. Go ahead and explain why performance isn’t fair or lower results needs to be qualified with an asterix. I’ll even grant you everyone doesn’t start the race in the same spot but the finish line is the finish line. It’s also fine to consider higher ranked schools to be sour grapes and not want anything to do with them, you just sound crazy when you proclaim your Pontiac to be a Cadillac.

Blair send more students to the ivies and top 20 than both schools combined.
Idiot

Takoma Park NIMBYism puts CCDC NIMBYism to shame. But because Takoma Park NIMBYs once took part in a no-nukes protest, they get let off the hook.

Yeah but there's no Takoma Torch for CCDC to take those people to task on the regular.

Takoma Park is big, and long. The areas near TPMS and the metro are expensive and there is no poverty. This is likely where OP is considering.

We went through this decision and chose Takoma Park. Very happy. Schools have been excellent and it is very neighborhoody. We also liked it because it is a little more interesting than CCDC, with unique shops and restaurants, and we are not hard-core leftists. It’s been great.

Your schools wished they could make the landscaping teams. They cannot even make that.
Sorry 😞

We went through that decision and chose TKPK our friends picked CCDC. Both are great but we collectively agreed that TKPK was better overall for our 2 families (they come to our place often and would like to move…).

It wouldn’t be true for everyone but here is why: TKPK more neighborhoody (someone earlier made comp with Gilmore girl and it made sense to me), less preppy, younger, more kids in the local public house/less private school kids, small town feel with big town open mindedness, more laid back and diverse, more political and engaged even though it is not anymore a hard core leftist place.

Schools are very good. Our friends in ccdc had to deal with more rich girl competitive consumption vibe which in our narrow experience has been non existent in TKPK. We love the kids our kids hang out with.

Security wise: we feel very safe and kids walk to school and walk around but no rosy glasses it is close in DMV with a lot of personal property theft. Not sure how it compares to ccdc.

In conclusion, both are great choices but if you value close knit community and fall on the less preppy more hippy side, TKPK is for you. If you enjoy having a more UMC lifestyle and more neighbors that share that lifestyle CCDC is for you
