PP questioned our role as leader of the free world. That role wasn't assigned; it was earned during a brutal world conflict and our sorry, selfish and spoiled arses continue to take the sacrifices of that generation for granted. |
Gaining it then and being entitled to it now are very different things. And if the U.S. can no longer honor their sacrificed Leigh reverence, prudence and a commitment to doing better, then the greater honor would be to acknowledge this and allow someone else who can to lead until such time that the US can find its soul again. |
We've lacked leadership for 8 years with two lousy elderly presidents. We haven't lost our soul. |
Leadership is earned everyday. |
Adams and Jefferson were loyal to each other as Americans first and foremost and that loyalty was apparent until the day they died. I promise you an angry mob attacking a Federal Building when Andrew Jackson was President would have ended up a very sad and mostly dead mob. All presidents since GW have shown some degree of sleaze and political corruption but Trump's the only president to ever go AWOL during an attack on our government and country. |
I wasn't aware that another Civil War has already started (and that it wasn't even safe to call Congress into session to authorize suspension of habeas corpus, which it did do later) or that the United States has declared war on any other countries. It took Hitler 6 years to start killing the disabled. We're only 3 days in. Physicians working for the federal government and whose jobs included a small slice of DEI work have already been placed on administrative leave. A regular conference call on H5N1 was cancelled yesterday. Two orphaned children from Burma set to join their relatives in the US had their flights cancelled. |

I’m so old I remember when Reagan was Hitler. And Bush. And Bush Jr. And McCain. And Romney. And Trump the first time around. But this time, surely, that’s the end of us!
I would say it’s tiresome, but really, it’s mostly just funny to watch the same hysterics every few years.
None of those (besides Trump): Said they were okay with terminating the Constitution. Called an election fraudulent and attempted to overthrow it both politically and by inciting violence. Tried to get state officials to find them more votes. Said that if they were elected voters would never have to vote again. Had a Supreme Court decision putting the President above the law. Trump was a threat to democracy his first term, he was just too inept to break through all the guard rails, but he managed to tear down enough to clear the way this term. Our democracy has held because of checks and balances, but there’s not much left to check his power. The other two branches of government shirked their responsibilities in favor of self-interest and then voters returned him to power (along with his MAGA supporters in Congress). That leaves us with a bureaucracy that he is dismantling, a polarized media that is so biased on both sides that it has lost most of the trust it once had, and a military whose leadership he is trying to replace with loyalists, putting into question whether they would defy illegal orders from their Commander-in-Chief in defense of their oath to the Constitution - and military coups aren’t typically known for restoring democracy. I fervently hope that I am wrong and my fears turn out to be needless paranoia. I would be thrilled if time proves me wrong. But portraying fears about this particular president as “business as usual” is deliberately misleading. Trump’s own words and deeds have laid the basis for suspicion. It may be traditional for liberals to accuse conservatives of being fascists (and conservatives to accuse liberals of being communists), but with Trump you have many conservatives (including myself) saying that this man represents a threat to democracy.
Very well stated. |
Was there democracy in post First World War Germany? Where was this democracy? |
Trump is more like a stupid Mussolini. It’s the people he surrounds himself with who are dangerous. But there won’t be any gas chambers so Hitler is not a great example. |
History is replete with interesting characters and stories, many of which have modern day parallels. Liberals are supposedly super educated and should know of these.
So please, please, please try using other historical analogies now and then. Its really tedious. |
OK. How about Caligula? |
Oh, are you bored by fascism references? The problem with that is MAGA doesn’t recognize any of those names. And there’s nothing inaccurate about the parallels to Hitler in the 1930s. Of course, MAGA doesn’t know about that either which is why they still don’t get it. And also, many of them are fine with fascism. You’re insufferable to complain about this. And you’ve bought into the propaganda of holding liberals to a ridiculous standard of perfection. |
Well it is a bit rich that the left now hates jews and also hitler?? |
They literally published Project 2025 and told people what they were going to do, and voters still voted for them. |
Once the Proud Boys beat up people in midtown Manhattan and and Trump pardons them, you will know democracy is dead. Personally, I hope some of the Proud Boys get beaten up. |
