My kid turned down a top Cali school and stayed in New England and I’m so glad now.

Prayers for all those people affected. It’s absolutely devastating.

UC apps were due Dec 2. USC is the late one, due this coming Wed Jan 15. No, I don't think at this point this changes their app numbers.

Whether it changes their yield is a different question, though I doubt it. At least by April we will all have a better sense of what is going on with housing near UCLA. USC won't be affected.

UCLA announced yesterday that classes will be online this week (through 1/17). The campus is open and students have been notified to be ready to evacuate if necessary. They are not under an evacuation order at this time.

This thread introduced me to a whole new DC where there’s no natural disasters that have ever happened.

I get people here are privileged, but it’s awfully annoying hearing people 1000s of miles away with awful speculation on what could happen to perfectly safe colleges bemoan how “this is it” for California colleges. If you

DCUM helicopter parents using So Cal fires as validation to keep junior within 4 hour drive from home — the greatest cope ever. LOL

Guilty! Whatever it takes 7 hours is fine with a one hour flight. The same time zone!

What support do OOS students need? Just hop on a plane and leave.

Makes sense. It's hard to fly a helicopter with all that smoke!

Congrats! Ours is going to the Claremont colleges and we’re excited. California is a beautiful place.

For USC darling a helicopter is lame - It’s daddy’s private jet and it’s always fueled.

Please never say that again. It’s like nails on a chalkboard for those us who grew up in the Bay Area. ((Shudders))

On the UCLA v Michigan weather debate 2 years ago I cited wildfires as a reason I was happy that DS chose Michigan and was happy there. I’m a CA native in DC and had been originally hoping he’d go to my home state. Then my town burned. People said I was absolutely crazy and hysterical. That would never happen. I cited that UCLA had been evacuated before, and people said I was ridiculous for mentioning it. 🤔

The thing is, while you see a morbid pattern, an undergrad at UCLA or Pepperdine may experience disruption from Wildfires once in their 4 year tenure, and it’s never for a full semester or some long duration. It’s not enough to discount an otherwise good college.

People on DCUM parrot information they heard from other posters. In 3 years, they’ll go back to talking about how they’re applying to Pepperdine and UCLA, and they will make fun of anyone else bringing up wildfires.
