UCLA and USC and others SoCal schools?

My kid is at UCLA. Yesterday they extended remote learning through Monday and today they extended it through Friday. Lots of kids have left and local parents on the FB pages have been offering support to oos and international students.

I mean, I would assume not everyone can afford a last minute ticket for a previously undefined period of time. Monday classes only went remote last night and it was just today they went remote for the week. If my kid weren’t already taken care of I would only now fly them home now.

Is it vast, no, on average there are more kids from lower incomes in-state, but the number off oos students whose families are stretching to have them there isn’t zero.

No OOS students are on need-based financial aid and are paying 76k cost of attendance. One-way tickets from LA to Washington Dulles this week are $410 on United.

If they are that stretched, then the kid stays on campus. Campus is not closed.

It’s extremely unlikely a fire would cross the 405. This is wishing ill when it’s unnecessary. Pacific palisades residents live in a fire-prone area and they know that. Altadena’s name literally has origin in meaning upper crown of the valley.

My kid is at USC. Plenty of communications from the school (daily). The school is physically unaffected by the fires though administration is expressing (rightfully so) concern about employees who may be affected. Classes and business as usual on Monday.

There are natural disasters everywhere. Hurricaines, blizzards, tornadoes... pick your poison. The trick to living with fire risk is to follow evac orders when given and be prepared to lose large material possessions, though odds of either happening are actually quite small.

We have two properties in a western state where fires are common. We are aware that our vacation house in the mountains, if fire comes, would just be gone and we are ok with that. However, in 20 years, we've never been under even pre-evac orders at either spot. Fires are typically very localized.

I have not been following the LA fire news carefully, but from the little I saw, the water scarcity issue is a problem and shouldn't have been unforeseen. There are probably issues behind the response.

No. The issue is 80-100 mph winds that spread fire faster and farther than any fire fighting force could contain it. This is what fire experts are saying, if people would stop watching Fox News and listen. Stop spreading misinformation.

UCLA has not been evacuated. They canceled classes Thursday and Friday, and they are near an evacuation zone. But it has not been evacuated.
